Diary Of A Baller: Bryan "Trey" Hall (Hartford County, CT) Entry #3

Trey Hall AT UA Next Combine

Hello again, Basketball World!

Trey Hall signing back in for the third entry of my basketball diary. This week was definitely busy from a basketball sense, as I spent most evenings in the gym getting prepared for Under Armour's UA Next Combine in Maryland. It was also a week spent getting readjusted to school after April vacation came to an end.

Monday was back to school, so I had to wake up early and get back into my morning routine. I was still a little tired from our tournament that weekend, but managed to stay focused though the school day. A week off of school meant a lot of homework, so I got right to it as soon as I got home. Once I finished my homework, I got picked up for a workout with my Lightning Coach, Dre. That day's workout focused on ball handling, spot shooting, and using dribble moves to create space from defenders. Coach Dre really emphasizes scoring the ball from all areas whenever our team needs a bucket. In the past few years I've known him, he has played a key role in my individual accomplishments on the basketball court. He has always kept it real with me on where I stand with my game and what I need to work on. I just feel blessed to have my parents and Coach Dre behind me to take basketball as far as its meant to. Once we left the workout I went home, ate dinner, and went right to bed.

Tuesday was fast moving compared to the slow start I had on Monday. We were working on projects and worksheets in all my classes, so the school day flew by. Once I got home I finished up the worksheets we were given as homework. As soon as those were done, I took out my laptop and got an early start on a three page paper that was due Thursday. Man, did that take forever. I didn't have workouts that evening so I got some extra time to finish up the paper. It was a rest day, so I spent the the evening eating dinner and watching TV before falling asleep.

Wednesday was a light school work day since I was already done with my project and worksheets. In all of my classes I was ahead so I got to relax and catch up on some reading I needed to do. I only had two pieces of homework, so I had some time to relax before that evening's workout with my Father. Workouts with him are very tiring since he's in great shape and knows how to mix conditioning and skill work together. We did a lot of ball handling and situation drills so I can react to different ways defenders are playing me. At the end of the drills we put up a lot of shots for repetition and to keep my shot consistent.

Thursday was another school day that went by pretty fast. I got home and had to do my house chores right away since I had another job interview for a summer lifeguard position. I felt prepared and confident going into the interview and when it was over I was offered the job! I still hadn't heard back from last week's lifeguard interview, so I was happy to have a job offer on the table. The interview was at a rec center so I went right from that room to the building's gym for a workout. That night's workout was ran by Muhammed, who is a really good trainer I used to work with when I was younger. We did a lot of conditioning and core work including 100 push ups, 70 curl ups, around 60 crunches, and 10 minutes of jump rope. Toward the end of the workout we focused on ball handling, guard skills, and finishing at the rim through contact. Most people would consider their day done after school, chores, an interview, and a workout, but my day wasn't done just yet. From the gym I headed right to my church in Hartford for choir rehearsal. Singing in the choir continues to be a great way to stay connected to God and show appreciation for what he has done for my family, friends and I. I hope that me writing about my life inspires others to connect to church as much as possible as God continues to keep my family and I safe and strong. Once choir was over I ate, got myself ready for bed and knocked out.

I woke up Friday with a lot of excitement. I was in a great mood since I would be traveling that night to DC for the Under Armour Top 40 Combine. School was fun because we didn't have a lot of classwork, so there was time to relax and get ahead with some reading. The minute I got home from school, I packed for my flight that evening. I had time to get a haircut before my Dad and I went to the airport. We had a blast the whole time we were traveling; I always do when I'm with my parents. We play music, laugh, and take videos and pictures the whole time we are traveling and hanging out. There have been many times where people have asked to take pictures with my Father and I and asked questions because they thought we played for UConn or were in the NBA. We laugh about it but it really happens all the time. We arrived to DC late in the evening so it was straight to our hotel and right to bed for an early wake up call.

After waking up and eating breakfast Saturday morning, I got myself ready to compete in the Under Armour Next combine. The UA Next combine is an event for players to showcase their skills infront of some very important people in the basketball circle. It is also how players get invited to play in the UA Next game, which is the middle school version of the Under Armour Elite 24. The top 40 players in the Eastern region of the country were invited and we all had to compete against one another in drills and games throughout the day. There was a lot of great talent on the floor and everyone competed hard!! It was a great experience playing against some of the top players in the region and being pushed by coaches from different colleges. It was also great to play in front of a lot of well known people who do player evaluating and rankings. At the end of the combine I was definitely drained. My body was sore and I was ready to get home. We jumped right in the car and drove to the airport for our flight back to Connecticut. As soon as I got home I took a long shower, ate dinner, and relaxed since I had church in the morning.

Even though I wanted to sleep in, I got myself up early Sunday morning for church. I had a good time listening to the word of the God and learned a couple of things from what the Pastor was preaching about. He spoke about not letting the devil in the way of our accomplishments and trying to stop you from pursuing your dreams and goals. Those words inspired me because they relate to the academic and basketball goals I want to achieve in life. After church I went out to celebrate some good news I received later in the week. First, I got a letter in the mail letting me know that I will be receiving an award at graduation for being a leader in my school. I am President of the Student Council which means in a lot of ways I serve as a role model to my classmates and younger students in my school. It felt good to know that teachers have recognized my commitment to our school so it will be a night to look forward to. Second, I was excited to receive another letter offering me the lifeguard job I interviewed for last week! Now that I've been offered both jobs, I'll have some decisions to make. Staying humble, working hard, and having faith always seems to bring good things! As I sign off on this Sunday evening, stay tuned as I prepare for the John Lucas Camp next weekend.

Stay blessed!

1. Team Takeover (Black): TTB has been dominant all season on the 8th grade level and has moved on the high school circuit. It will be tough for any teams to knock them out of the top spot. They have one of the best 8th Grade squads I recent years.

3. We R 1: The Delaware based squad crashed the party at the AC Showcase and made it to the finals. I like what they are building and should be a favorite to win the MDC.

4. New Heights: NH hasn’t been in the Spotlight for a while but has shown success in other events. They have some of the top prospects in the region and should have continued success.

5. Team Final (Blue): Team Final returns to Spotlight action during the Memorial Day Classic. It should be interesting as they could be on a collision course with rival We R 1.

My Camp Experience: Tyler Brelsford (Ellicott City, MD)

Tyler Brelsford At John Lucas IMSC

Tyler Brelsford of Ellicott City, Maryland traveled to Houston, Texas for the John Lucas International Combine. Basketball Spotlight reached out to Brelsford and here’s his experience.

Friday 5/6/16
On Friday, I went to school and was thinking about the camp all day. After School I went home and got packed for the trip to Houston, TX. I had a good week of training and I was confident and felt well prepared. Our flight was at 8:00pm and when my Dad and I got to the airport I saw one of my buddies Cam Byers, who was on the same flight. We were talking and catching up with each other. We landed in Houston around 12 midnight. I got to the hotel and went straight to bed.
Saturday 5/7/16
I got a good night sleep and I was glad the camp didn’t start until 12 noon. My dad and I woke up around 9:30am and went to IHop to eat breakfast. We got to the camp about 11:15am to get registered and get my jersey. The day was really long, we had a 5 hour workout of conditioning, dribbling and shooting drills, and some 1 on 1 action. During the 1 on 1, I was off and couldn’t really make a shot, but I knew that wasn’t going to last the whole weekend. We had dinner around 5pm and then it was time for games. My first game I played good. I shot the ball well, got my teammates involved and was a good leader. The second game I couldn’t really hit a shot, but I did other things to help my team. John Lucas ended the games a little early due to selfish play and players being out of shape. He then gave us a speech and let us go home. After camp I went to the hotel and chilled with my friend Ryan Conway. We ate pizza and talked about the day.

Sunday 5/8/16
I woke up around 6:00am, the camp started at 7:30am. I wanted to be early so I could get some extra work in. We did drills for two hours and then we played two games. My first game was my best game all weekend, I couldn’t miss. I got to be on the same team with some of my buddies, Trey Hall and John Wilson, and that was fun. We had some guest speakers, Justin Jackson (UNC) and Troy Williams (Indiana) and the camp ended at 12noon. After that my friend and I, Terrance Williams went to the mall and got something to eat. Out flight wasn’t until 8pm. I landed at around 12 midnight and then had to get ready for school the next day. I had a really good experience at the John Lucas IMSC.

Diary Of A Baller: Trey Hall (Hartford County, CT) Entry #4

Trey Hall & Friends At John Lucas IMSC

What's up Basketball World?

My apologies for the delay with this diary entry, but as always I'm excited to update you all on the week I've had since my last check in. It was another important week of preparation for me with the John Lucas Camp being only 5 days away.

Monday was a typical school day, but I was still feeling a little drained from the previous weekend's Under Armour combine. Even though my body was sore I came home after school and got my homework done before heading to a workout with my Dad. That night's workout focused on combination moves off the dribble and attacking the basket from different angles. Surprisingly, my body didn't feel so tired once we got going. After we finished up, I played a few games of pickup with some older guys who were also in the gym that evening. It was a little late by the time pickup was done so I headed right home, ate dinner, and got ready for bed.

Tuesday was similar to Monday, but I had a few tests to study for later in the week. After feeling like I had studied enough of my notes, I had a little time to rest before hitting the gym for my workout. That evening's workout was heavy on ball handling and conditioning but I was also able to get a lot of shots up during the drills. Conditioning was especially important with the Lucas camp coming up, since those environments are tiring and last all day. We started and finished earlier than Monday, so I got home in enough time to watch NBA playoff games before getting myself ready for bed.

Wednesday I had chores and more studying to do once I got home from school, so that took up a majority of my afternoon. I went for a run around my neighborhood and went to Wednesday church service since I hadn't been all week. The Pastor preached that night about the importance of taking care of our bodies and treating them like a temple. Once again I could relate to this since it's important as an athlete to stay in good physical shape. It's also good to maintain healthy habits for life in general. After getting home and eating dinner, I got some extra studying in for my tests the following morning.

Thursday was just more proof that preparation pays off in life. I haven't received my grades yet, but I'm pretty sure I did well on both my tests. With the tests behind me I was able to enjoy the rest of the day, which went by really fast. I had a few pieces of homework to do and once I finished I went outside for a long run. That night I had choir rehearsal. It's typically on Monday nights but this week they switched it to Thursday. We've been learning new songs for a trip to New York next weekend where we'll visit and sing at our Pastor's former church. Once rehearsal was done it was the usual routine of going home, eating dinner, and getting ready for bed. It was hard to fall asleep that night because I was excited thinking about the Lucas Camp. I felt confident that all my preparation would pay off against some really good competition from across country.

I woke up Friday excited and ready to compete. I flew into Houston that evening and had time to make it to a Houston Astros game with my Lightning teammates Posh, Quron, and Gary, who were also in town for camp. We talked about how excited we were to go against players we've never faced and representing the Northeast. The game actually had a lot of hits and home runs, so it didn't move as slow as other baseball games I've been to. After the game we went straight to our hotel and hung out in the lobby for a little while before going to sleep. Once again it was hard to fall asleep, but eventually I did.

The Lucas camp didn't start until noon Saturday which allowed us to sleep in a little. Houston is an hour behind local time in Connecticut, so it actually felt later than 9:30 am when we woke up. We ate breakfast, got dressed, and listened to some music before heading to the Legends Sports Complex where the camp was held. We checked in, got our jerseys, and shot around before the coaches broke us down into teams for testing and stations. The stations were all competitive and challenging, which was good for our overall development. I saw and was teamed up with quite a few players I knew from other camps, tournaments, and leagues; it made me realize just how fortunate I am to have met as many people and been exposed to the places I've seen through basketball. After the drills, we played games in front of coaches and talent evaluators who were seeing some of us for the first time. I played hard and definitely felt fatigued when Coach Lucas ended the camp for the evening. My teammates and I ate, talked about our experiences that day, then went right back to the hotel for bed. Camp was scheduled to start at 7:00 Sunday morning, so the alarm would be going off early!

When the alarm went off Sunday morning, it felt like I had only slept for a few hours. We had to be at the gym for 7:00, so we quickly got dressed and had a light breakfast before taking the quick drive. Everyone's body was sore from all the drills and games on Saturday, but I was excited to compete again. There were a few guest speakers to start the morning before we did a few more hours of station work. Once we finished, it was back to game play for the last 2 hours of camp. Before we began playing we were all notified that the coaches assigned us to new teams, so everyone was interested to know who they were playing with. My new team had a few guys I'm friends with and play against back home (John Wilson and Tyler Brelsford), so it was fun to play together in that environment. Once again I played hard and felt like my shot was falling from all the preparation before camp. Each team had great athletes and players so I was pleased to play well against that level of competition. Coach Lucas brought us all together and gave a brief speech before camp ended for the weekend. After showering at the hotel and getting something to eat, we all headed to the airport for our flights home. By the time I walked in my door, it was after 1:00 am. But as a committed student-athlete, I was up in the morning and at school just a few hours later. After a long week, I'm signing off until next time.

Stay blessed!

Zion "The Lion" Harmon

7th Grader Zion Harmon made a huge statement on the national scene as he tallied 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists to lead We All Can Go All Stars over Team Takeover 68-67 in the Nike EYBL 17U Division. Harmon capped his big day off by making the game winning shot on a follow up. Check out the video below of his game winner. He also made history being the first 7th Grader to play on the Nike EYBL 17U level.

Zion’s father Mike Harmon feels blessed about his son’s performance, “I knew Zion could play and has poise but I didn’t know he could turn in a performance like this on this huge stage. We are very blessed but he understands that it’s a long road and he must continue to work hard” he finished. Basketball Spotlight will keep you updated on Harmon’s success as he continues to make history.

Is Isaiah Todd The #1 Player In America?

Isaiah Todd (Team Loaded)

This past fall when we released our Class of 2020 player rankings we talked about Isaiah Todd having the ability to one day reach to top of this list. This day might be sooner than later. The 6’9 forward is developing his wing game and preparing his game for the high school level and beyond. He currently resides in Richmond, VA and has become one of the building blocks for Team Loaded. Well known scout William Francis of P2Bball.com feels that the skills Todd is learning will benefit him beyond high school.“The drills and the way they are developing him is grooming him for the major college or NBA level. He’s learning how to do things that are advanced than the normal high school player. The scariest aspect of his game is that he hasn’t scratched the surface of his potential” said Francis.

In terms of rankings Francis also gives Todd the nod. “Right now I would have to say he’s the #1 player in the country for the Class of 2020 and it could be a spot he could hold on for a long while” he finished. Basketball Spotlight will be keeping an eye on top prospect Isaiah Todd and other top players in the country. We will really see if he’s #1 in the country. Stay tuned as we bring you the inside look to more top players in the country.

NY Rens Take Stand Against Gun Violence!

It’s a well-known fact that gun violence has been a serious problem in our country for years especially in the inner city. One basketball program has decided to step up. The NY Rens have decided to wear orange patches throughout their program to give awareness of gun violence. Their effort has not only affected their program but many teams throughout the country have also joined the movement. They were recently featured on ESPN and you can check out the video below. Basketball Spotlight is extremely proud of the NY Rens Organization and will like to help out anyway we can.

Spotlight Alum Karl Anthony Towns Wins NBA Rookie Of The Year!

Karl Anthony Towns

Basketball Spotlight Alum Karl Anthony Towns was a unanimous choice for NBA Rookie of the Year. Towns competed in Basketball Spotlight with Team NJABC and finished his middle school career by dominating the J.E.M. All Star Classic. Towns went on to have a stellar high school career at St. Joseph’s Metuchen before heading off for one year at the University of Kentucky.

Last summer Towns was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 1st overall pick. It didn't take Towns very long to make an impact. He had 28 points and 14 rebounds in the second game of the season, a victory over Denver, and though many rookies hit a wall in the middle of the long, grueling NBA regular season, Towns got better as the season went on. He averaged 21.3 points on 55 percent shooting and 11.7 rebounds in the final 31 games of the season.

Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Towns on his success and wish him more in the future.

Trey Hall

Hello again Basketball World!

Welcome back for the fifth week of my basketball diary. As school winds down for the year I'm finding myself even more busy with class work, but a few weeks from now I'll be able to put the textbooks down for the summer.

Speaking of school, it was tough to wake up Monday after getting home at 1:00 am from Lucas camp in Houston. I woke up sore and thought to myself that my body could use a night off from workouts. I went through the school day with that in mind but after getting home and finishing my homework, I started to think about the level of commitment it takes to play basketball at a high level. How soreness will be a part of the process and how someone else is out there working on their game while I'm not. Those thoughts motivated me to go to my workout and get through all the drills full speed. After ball handling, combo moves, and some up and down run, I came home and went to sleep soon after.

Tuesday was an important day for me because I had my end of the year band concert that evening. I play the drums, which many people call the heartbeat of a band. We had a brief rehearsal after school, then I had some time to finish homework before the actual performance. There were many parents, teachers, and students who came out to the concert; it was a nice way to show our families how hard we work throughout the year. The concert ended early enough for me to catch up on some TV shows before going to bed.

Wednesday seemed like the longest school day of the year, but I didn't have any homework so I couldn't complain. Since I hadn't had much downtime all week, I took a quick nap when I got home before heading to a workout. We didn't have the gym long, so the drills were fast moving with a lot of running in between. After getting up a lot of shots, we ran up and down until the gym closed. I wanted to get some extra sleep that night, so I didn't waste time eating dinner and getting myself ready for bed when I got home.

Thursday I caught myself thinking about the end of the school year and how high school is right around the corner. My time in middle school has gone by so much faster than I thought it would. New teachers, new classmates, and new buildings are going to take some time to get used to. I'm sure I'll think about these things even more in the next few weeks, but for now I'm enjoying what's left of my middle school experience. After getting home, I finished up my homework then headed to choir rehearsal. We have just over a week before our concert in upstate New York, so we had to learn new songs that we'll be singing for the first time. Rehearsal went a little late that night, but we still got out in enough time to catch the NBA playoffs. I ate dinner while watching the game before heading to my room for the night.

Friday's school day ended without any homework assignments, so I was excited to have a weekend without school work. That evening I got to hang out with some of my boys whom I haven't seen in a few weeks because of my basketball schedule. We watched a few movies and played 2K all night until everyone fell asleep. I was careful not to be up too late because I had a tournament in Springfield, MA the next day.

My Saturday games were later in the afternoon, so I didn't have to wake up too early. I had time to go out for breakfast, get a haircut, and go visit some family before heading to Springfield for my games. We were playing up an age group so I figured we'd have to play even harder against older, more physical players. We played against some pretty good competition, but were good enough to beat both teams by more than 20 points. Playoff games were scheduled for the next morning so I went to bed as soon as I got home.

Sunday was about getting focused to play for a championship at the Basketball Hall of Fame. We knew we'd have to beat some good teams to do that, and felt confident that we'd win our games if we played hard and played together. We got off to a slow start in our quarterfinal game but ended up winning by about 10 points. There were a few hours to wait before playing the semifinal so we made sure to hydrate and rest between games. After another slow start, we took control of the semifinal game and had a 2 point lead with 6 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, the opposing team was able to get off a 3 point shot that went in right as the buzzer sounded. Game over. One point loss. As a competitor I was upset we didn't win the game, but it was also a chance for our team to learn something through that kind of loss. After we huddled and spoke about ways we can avoid that kind of loss in the future, everyone got into their cars and headed back home. Since we were home earlier than expected I had plenty of time to shower, eat, and watch a movie before getting myself ready for bed. As this entry comes to a close it's time to get ready for another week of school, ball, family, and church. I'll update you all next week.

Until then, stay blessed!
