Tim Dog Showcase Recap: Capital City Heat Grabs Crown

Capital City Heat Takes Title.

The Tim Dog Showcase Championship took place at West Ward Recreation Center and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. In the finals Capital City Heat defeated Larry Richardson All Stars 37-30 to win the championship. Here are the players that impressed us in our hometown.
Top Performers

Rodrique Massenat Forward (CCH)- Massenat arrived at tip off but once he checked in he got right to action. He plays the big man role but his guard skills spill from his veins. I like his aggression and his tools from the backcourt spot. He led the team in scoring with 24 markers but his handle and court vision told the story. His cousin Franz Massaenat is “The Man” for Drexel University and it seems to be another bloodline member on the way.

Jordan Livingston Guard (CCH)- Livingston played like a polished 7th Grader during this event. He lets the game come to him while punishing the defense with breakaway layups and silky smooth pull ups. He’s one we definitely need to keep our eye on.
Chris Jackson Guard (CCH)- The true floor general would rather dish the rock then be a selfish scorer. He understands his limits and looked to get the ball to the finishers on his squad. Every team needs a quarterback and he handles the job well.
Quentin Beyah Guard (CCH)- This baby of the bunch is a 5th Grader and when he got chance he showed some potential. He’s not strong enough to impact the game on this level but I can tell he will be a problem down the road. Keep working hard youngster.
Ricky Bailey (LR All Stars)- Bailey was a total workhorse on the floor. He had a game high 20 points for the losing team but led them back to make the game respectable. He has a high motor and a nose for the ball that is natural. He’s only a 7th Grader so he has time to work on his skill set. Ricky finished the season as the league leading scorer.
Zahrion Blue (LR All Stars)- Blue has good size and can finish off some plays. I like his tough from the perimeter and he comes from a good basketball background. Now he needs to work on his ball handling and ability to make plays. He has more growing to do so his story is far from being done.
Barbara Blue (LR All Stars)- Zahrion sister is only a 6th Grader and she got busy with the boys. She understands the game and has a soft touch. At times she was over powered because of her gender but she will be a real problem on the girl level in the future. I expect TCA and other schools to be recruiting her hard soon.

Nate At Barclay Center Getting Ready

Hello basketball world my name is Nate Pierre-Louis and this is my very first journal entry and I'm very excited to be a part of the Diary Of A Baller on Bballspotlight.

This week was a very tough week. I am going to start from Sunday. Sunday was a great day but tough at the same time. We played the quarter-finals and the semi-finals in the same day. First we beat New Heights. It was a really fun game. Then we played PYO (Philadelphia Youth Organization). That was a really tough game, very physical but fun game. We pulled it out at the end. We beat them to go to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn New York on Sunday. It was a great birthday gift.

Monday was a tough day. I had to wake up so early to go to school after playing 2 games the day before. I was proud at myself, but tired at the same time.

Tuesday was a usual day. It was a regular day at school. I was looking forward to Spanish class but my Spanish teacher was out because she was sick. That mean our test was canceled and i studied the last three days! After school I had to hurry up and go home and get ready for my Christmas concert. My class sung "Beautiful Christmas" by Big time rush. I know what you’re thinking Big Time Rush really? I was thinking the same thing before I sang it. It was an awesome day.

Wednesday was a really long day. I had my math block schedule. I wasn't really looking forward to that because I had a test and I really didn't understand the material. Then we go into class then he said "test on Thursday" I'm like what in the world. Let's get off that subject and skip to practice. Practice was so crazy. Our coach was running late so I had to be a leader and do the stretches and stuff. I stayed after practice and worked out and left the gym super late. I love doing that.

Thursday was so fun. School was great. I took my reading, math and science test in one day. That was the difficult part of my day. I went Christmas shopping for my friends and family and had to rush home because Joshua had to go to practice. But the best part of my day was when I was home by myself, talking on the phone and playing my career on 2k13 for like two hours. I have to chill out and that's something that I don't do often.

Friday was a really fun day. I got to hang out with my friends the entire day at school. It was a half a day. I really enjoyed school. Now back to the basketball part. Joshua, Christian and I had a game at Pope John in West Orange, New Jersey. My brother Joshua won his 5/6 game and he also plays with me on the 7th and 8th grade team. Christian (my youngest brother) plays with Joshua on the 5th and 6th grade team. By the way he is only in 2nd grade. Let’s get back to the subject. I had a triple double in two quarters. We blew the team out. It was fun playing with my brother and friends.

Saturday I had to wake up at 6:00 am to go for a workout at 7:30 with my father. It is the breakfast club. It was really intense. I love working out in the mornings. My father wakes me up in the car because I'm still half asleep. He always keeps me motivated to reach my destination and my ultimate goal. After my workout we had to take Christian to his game. He plays up with the 3rd and 4th grade team. I kept the score and met up with some friends at the game. My little brother was killing. Even though he didn't shoot the ball well, he was so dominate as a 2nd grader. That game was so intense. It went all the way to the last second. I felt so bad. Christian missed the game tying bucket. The crazy thing he acted like nothing happened. I could never do that. After all this we went Joshua's practice. He had a tough practice working hard. After that I went to see my grandfather all the way in Long Island before Christmas. I was so tired.

Sunday I woke to birthday punches waiting for me. I was excited to play at the Barclays Center for the championship game! We went to I hope to celebrate my birthday. Then after that we went to Brooklyn to go to the Barclays. It was a smooth ride. I was anxious. We got to meet the 76ers players like Spencer Hawes, Nick Young and Jrue Holiday. We took pictures with the dancers and actually went on the court during the national anthem. I stood in front of Jrue Holiday. I was so happy. We all went up in the stands and watched the game. Ok now GAME TIME. We played CBC. It was a good game in the first 3 quarters then they just went on a crazy run. I was so mad at myself. I missed some easy shots that I usually make. I just want to congratulate Jaecee Martin and the whole CBC family and organization on the win. After the game I went to Applebees with my family. I was so mad that they took my favorite desert the Blondie off the menu. I had a great night with the family and looking forward to tomorrow. I will see my family in North Carolina for Christmas.

Peace basketball world. Nate is out over. Hope you all have a great Christmas!

Team IZOD Is Currently The Team To Beat

The 6th Grade Division of the Spotlight circuit is turning into one of the most exciting. These youngsters have been getting busy heavy on the floor. Here is our 1st Quarter Report.

6th Grade 1st Quarter Report

Team To Beat: Team IZOD
Team IZOD squad has jump out as the team to beat. They ran through the Tip Off Classic in impressive fashion. They seem to have all the pieces to make a successful run to the Grand Finale crown and AAU National Championship. They are currently on a mission.

Surprise Team: Team First
Team First made a championship run in their Spotlight debut. They knocked off some pretty good teams in the process. Now they must be able to stay afloat as the circuit only gets stronger.

M.I.A. Team: Team Nelson
TN won’t be making their Spotlight debut until the MLK Classic. They are the defending Grand Finale champs so they should be ready to go. We will be taking a good look at this bunch.

Darkhorse: ETU Select
The PV group made a final four run at the Tip Off Classic but will be looking to make the championship run at the Clash. They had a good showing before running into that juggernaut named Team IZOD.

Player Of The Year Leader: AJ Hoggard (Team IZOD)
The POY of the Year race is very close so far but my scout tells me the Hoggard all around play makes him the leading candidate. Formerly known as “Mc Buckets” Hoggard has put away the scoring moniker to become the ultimate floor general. This unselfish nature will give this squad the best chance to win.

Supreme Team Appears To Be The Squad

The 7th Grade Division of the Spotlight circuit is total fire. It’s filled from top to bottom with top teams and talent. Here’s our 1st Quarter report.

7th Grade 1st Quarter Report

Team To Beat: Team IZOD
During the Tip Off Classic the “Supreme Team” proved they could handle the pressure and expectations. Now they are in the driver’s seat towards the Grand Finale but beware because many teams will be trying to knock them off course.

Surprise Team: Playtime Panthers
Their final four run at the Tip Off Classic proves this squad is a real title contender. They have improved in the backcourt and added some size. They remain a dangerous team and should be a lock for the Grand Finale.

M.I.A. Team: DC Assault
Everyone is wondering what the National Champs are bringing to the table. Word is they won’t be in action until March, if so they will have some catching up to do to get back into the zone of other squads.

Darkhorse: Wall 2 Wall
Something tells me this is not a team anyone would want to draw at the Grand Finale. Hopefully their recent success doesn’t slowdown their hunger as the underdog. Keep that Clubber Lane swagger going!

Player Of The Year Leader: Javon Quinerly (Team IZOD)
Quinerly rocked the Tip Off Classic while leading Team IZOD to the crown. The combo guard confidence is through the roof and he seems unstoppable when trying to get into the lane. In transition he was a total monster. Hopefully he can keep this good play going.

Money Team Leads The Pack

The 8th Grade Division of the Spotlight circuit has to be one of the best in America. It really doesn’t get any better than this. Here’s our 1st Quarter report.

8th Grade 1st Quarter Report

Team To Beat: CBC
The “Money Team” proved they are the best by winning the Tip Off Classic and Funsport Jr. Pros. They have been collecting trophies all year now they will be looking to win that Grand Finale banner to hang in their gym.

Surprise Team: Playaz Basketball Club
No one knew what to expect from PBC but they showed it should be another good year by making it to the final four of the Tip Off Classic and championship of the Friars Classic. Now they must keep the momentum going.

M.I.A. Team: Team Scan
We thought TS would make their Spotlight debut at the Tip Off Classic. We really wanted to get a look at Mr. Waters and company. Hopefully we will see them soon.

Darkhorse: Team Final
TF got off to a tough start at the Tip Off Classic but something tells me they will still find their to their way to the Grand Finale. They are the defending champs and never count out the heart of a champion.

Player Of The Year Leader: Jermaine Samuels (CBC)
“The Terminator” lit up the Tip Off Classic and is a viable candidate but Samuels has been consistent this early season and doesn’t seem to show signs of slowing up. Winning is a component in our Player Of The Year equation so Samuels definitely has the leg up right now.

From The Director's Desk Feat: Ed Bright (Team IZOD/Sports U)

Team IZOD/Sports University has developed some of the top grammar school programs in the region. Their 6th Grade and 7th Grade squads are currently ranked #1 in the region while their 8th Graders seem to be coming along strong. We decided to reach out to Program Director Ed Bright to get some insight on their movement.

From The Director’s Desk

BS: What is the mission of Team IZOD/Sports U?
EB:Mike sports, education and politics are the three most dominant and pervasive social forces that shape our society and influence the quality and character of American culture. At Team IZOD we realize that the love of sports is so deeply embedded in our national consciousness that the values of millions of people — participants and spectators — are directly and dramatically affected by the values conveyed in sports. This places a significant social responsibility on our mentors and coaches at Team IZOD who influence our basketball players to assure that athletic competition helps build character and ethics and gives each of our student athletes a clear understanding of what their social contract is to their families, schools and communities.

BS: You guys have made a movement into the grammar school department, what prompt this move and how was it developed?
EB:We started out seven years ago as a 15U D2 basketball club. At that time Mike we wanted to bring urban and suburban kids together through the game of basketball and show them that their struggles were the same and stress how sports could help build character. Because of that one team and some measure of success we grew into a 15U – 17U program. In 2010 we felt that our program offered several distinct and dynamic value propositions that the average AAU program didn’t and felt that if we could reach the elite athlete earlier in life we could coach life skills that these young men could carry with them throughout there academic years, careers in basketball and more importantly after the game of basketball was over in their lives.

BS: What are some of the special programs you guys have designed for the young players?
EB:It starts with our Professional Development Modules taught by Cheryl Walker Robertson President of Protocol International http://4protocol.net/. These modules which are mandatory for all our age groups deals with everything from how to greet someone, how to shakes hands, how to dress, what to out on facebook. http://izod.com/thread/aau-team-izod/ Then we have a corporate agreement with IZOD where we do workshops on business and its required that our young men spend days at the company in corporate functions like sales, marketing, finance, project management and internal IZOD managers must sign off and approve their days work. We also do modules lead by Peter Harvey the Fmr. Attorney General in NJ on Leadership and Critical Thinking. We stress that your young men choose mentors in their lives and they learn how to be a good mentee. That’s aside for playing and teaching basketball at the highest level in America. Thanks in good part to Basketball Spotlight.

BS: Who are some of the top players that have played in your program?
EB: I should start with Eli Carter Rutgers, Quentin Decosey Temple, Derrick Williams Richmond, John Caprio Georgetown, Mario Moody Wagner, Lucky Jones Robert Morris, Patrick Cole Brinson Coppin State, and it continues with the class about to graduate in 2013 Josh Brown Temple, Hallice Cooke Oregon State, Spencer Weisz Princeton, and DeAndre Bembry St Joes. And players who have played with us at times are guys like Kyrie Irving now in the NBA. And we cant forget Gary Nova who is now the starting QB at Rutgers but was with IZOD for several great years.

BS: What was your best moment as director of this program?
EB: Mike, my claim to fame is that some of the best, dynamic and brightest people are part of Team IZOD. First it’s the partnership that IZOD has formed with us their belief that we can make a difference. Then the coaches and mentors in our program Brian Coleman, Darryl Dawkins, Joe Whalen, Reggie Carter, AD Gaffney, Ray Dover, Cas Wade, Lou Delgado, James Johns and Cicerone Chandler. My father always said if you’re the smartest guy in the group find another group. We have been blessed beyond measure to have what I believe a staff better than any in the country for a basketball leadership program.

BS: What has been your worst moment as director of this program?
EB: Mike, it’s a moment I will never forget. About 6 years ago a director of a program here in New Jersey approached me with one of his coaches or boys maybe I should say and literally wanted to fight because one of his kids said hello to me and his parents waved. I will never forget it because I realized at that time that many people aren’t in this for the right reasons. I remember how he said IZOD and Sports U was insignificant and there was no rivalry between us and his program. I have never forgotten that. I have always made sure that Team IZOD is a safe place. We don’t want any members of our staff that are looking to pimp a kid or catch a rising star. We want to teach our kids to know how to focus on what they want out of life. We want our young men to learn how to focus so they can decide early on what they want. If they don’t decide their focus someone else will decide it for them and we don’t want that.

BS: Give me one word that best describes your program?
EB: Mike, can I give you three. TRUST, FOCUS, EXCELLENCE.

BS: What is your opinion of Basketball Spotlight events?
EB: Mike, for Grammar school event there is no better platform than Basketball Spotlight. Your approach is comprehensive. You have created a forum for competition not just for the elite teams or players but even for the kids you just enjoy the game and want to compete and get better. Your events are professional and more importantly on time. Your website gives these young players a central point to see who is where and where the success is being had. You also care about these young men being more than just basketball players and you show that by creating a platform where they can speak and grow confidence in communicating.

Nate Sleeping ON NC Trip

Hello basketball world! I hope you guys enjoyed your Christmas. I know I did. I am going to start from Monday Christmas Eve.

Monday was Christmas Eve. My family did not know that we were coming down to North Carolina. We had fun the entire ride down making my grandmother think we couldn't make it this Christmas. The entire family would be there but not us. When we arrived it was fun yelling "surprise”! Everyone was so happy. My grandmother and great-grandmother was crying in joy. It was cool. I love seeing my family. I got a lot of gifts and had great food. I enjoyed my Christmas Eve.

Tuesday was Christmas Day. Family was coming in and out of the house the entire day. My family is a big sports family, especially basketball and football. The entire day we sat around ate good food and watched all of the Christmas Day games. I mean we saw the Boston and Nets game all the way to the Denver nuggets and the LA clippers game. We had a big discussion about who shot free throws better Shaq or Dwight. We found out they were just about the same. That was a fun day.

Wednesday, I had to do my take home math test. That was the hardest take home test ever! Teachers always make them more difficult. Crazy! Thanks to my cousin Danielle who is a brain helped me understand and feel more comfortable. I think I could get an A or A+. I worked really hard. After all of that craziness I packed my bag to go sleep over my Aunt's house. First we went to the mall. I got a new iphone case and got NCAA March madness. I also got a shirt made. It says Thing 1 like the Dr. Seuss character from the book "The Cat in the Hat". Then we went to Dave and Busters to celebrate my birthday (since I had a game on my birthday). We won so many tickets that the people in the store asked if we could come back to get the prizes.

Thursday, I went to work out with my brother Joshua and my dad. It was a really intense workout. I f we missed a free throw my dad made us run a 17. I ended up running one 17. I was so upset with myself. But then my brother and I played these two kids in 2on 2. They were in the same grade and same age as us. You know how that was going to end up. Joshua was making NBA 3’s and I was just playing my game. We were taking turns going in. We blew them out. I love playing 2 on 2 with my brother we always win. We went back to the mall and I shopped like crazy.

Friday started off boring. Then my dad says get dressed we’re going to a high school game in Raleigh. So I got dressed and it took us 2 hours. We ended up seeing my big bro Karl Towns play. We saw Micah Lancaster. Shout to Micah Lancaster for those passes for free food. That chili was good! When we got back to my grandma's house my uncle and aunt and their three kids (my cousins) were there. We were pretending we were monkeys. My little cousins were jumping all over the place. I love being the oldest cousin.

Saturday, We actually chilled out. That is something i hardly do. In my head I was thinking as soon as I get home I have to get back to work. But, i decided to catch up on watching college basketball. My grandmother gave us an input plug. You’re probably thinking why a input plug. Well Joshua forgot the plug for the Xbox so we didn't play video games the entire week. I was itching to play some 2k13 and NCAA March Madness. I was so happy. I played for like 6 Hours literally. Then I had to say my goodbyes to my family that was leaving because I was leaving the next day. Then I was watching TV and on the phone the entire night till I fell asleep. I was so tired.

It‘s Sunday and it is sad saying goodbye to my grandmother and great-grandmother. We are leaving North Carolina to go back up north. I'm going to miss my family. I am going to be on the road the entire day and night. Wish me luck for on my adventure through the states. Phone is charged, I should be alright. Ok basketball world you guys read about my week.

Hope you guys enjoyed it and enjoy your New Years. What are your goals for 2013? Peace Nate is out!!

Word On The Street: National Squads Stack Up!

A lot of things are going on around the AAU world right now. So we decided to hit a couple of our sources and bring you another “Word On The Street”. Remember some of this information is from reliable sources including those directly involved.

Bagley Heads To Tennessee?

Word from the south is that Class of 2018 stud Marvin Bagley Jr. has moved from Arizona to Tennessee. According to my source he now attends prep school in Tennessee and will be suiting up with the We All Can Go All Stars. This acquisition might put WACG right back in the mix for a National Title. We will keep you posted as this story develops.
Nowell To New Rens?

News out of New York is that high scoring combo guard Markquis Nowell will be returning from Kentucky to play for New Rens. Nowell will definitely bolster NR’s lineup with his scoring prowess. Distance shouldn’t be a problem as New Rens are known to fly players in when necessary. It will be interesting to see him matchup with his former squad.

Montgomery To Georgia United?

Georgia United finished runner up at the 6th Grade Nationals but might get over the top in Memphis as word is EJ Montgomery has joined the squad. If this is true Montgomery will give the defensive minded GU the offensive punch they need to get the job done. Stay tuned as we bring you more info from this situation.

Basketball Spotlight Alum Rondae Jefferson gave his hometown fans a treat at the Jameer Nelson Classic. Jefferson started a one man fast break and ended it with an alley opp lop to himself off the glass. Jefferson is a heavy McDonald All American Candidate; he starred on the Spotlight circuit with Educated Athletes which later became Team Nelson. He also played in the Elite 80 Expo and the Basketball Spotlight All Star Classic. He finished ranked in our Top Class 2012 Regional Top 10. Right now the University of Arizona commit is one the top prospects in America.

Name: Marlon Hargis

Hometown: Mays Landing, NJ

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2018

Skillcase Analysis: Hargis is a scoring guard by nature but did show the ability to get teammates involved. His ball handling lets me know that he has been playing on a competitive level for a while. He was very comfortable doing the drill portion which means he’s a hard worker. I look forward to seeing him on the AAU circuit.

Name: Trevor Covey

Hometown: Freehold, NJ

Position: Forward

Class: 2018

Skillcase Analysis: Covey has always been known as a versatile forward. He used this weekend to display those skills. He was able to show promise on the post and in the midrange area. He was a good student during drill instruction and worked hard. I think as he matures he will have to become a little more physical.

Clash Of The Titans: Jaecee "Mayweather" Martin vs. Tremont "The Natural" Waters (Cast Your Vote)

This battle has been discussed on chat boards and through mail questions. Since we have not seen them on the floor we decided to let the fans chime in. In this edition of the Clash Of The Titans we take our focus to Connecticut. Who’s really the best 8th Grade point guard in Connecticut right now? Is it Jaecee “Mayweather” Martin and Tremont Waters?

Tale Of The Tape

Jaecee Martin (CBC)- Mayweather is a proven winner and has been known to save his best outings for when the stage is the biggest. He’s led the “Money Team” to several Spotlight banners and has shown to be a warrior when in battle. He loves dishing the rock but can also fill up the scoring column if needed. Right now he has the keys to the best engine in the region with his CBC.

Tremont Waters (Team Scan)- Waters plays up in age group a lot which is part of the reason we never saw these tangle. He made waves last spring putting in work on the high school circuit with Team Scan. He has superb court vision and some of the deepest range in America. His smoothness has drawn comparison to a young Chris Paul.

Introducing Alfred Hollins AKA Baby Durant

Some basketball purest say you can’t much from a player’s highlight video, but sometimes you can look at a player’s footage and instantly know that he has something special about him. Introducing Alfred Hollins an 8th Grader from California! This youngster passes the look test standing 6’3 but his fluid game caught my attention. His smoothness and body control reminds me of a young Kevin Durant. He seems to glide through the defense before stretching out to the basket. I’ve read that he has dreams of playing at NC if so Roy Williams might be getting a good one down the road.

Super Skillcase Profile: MJ Wright (Freehold, NJ)

Name: MJ Wright

Hometown: Freehold, NJ

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2019

Skillcase Analysis: Wright is a tenacious defender that doesn’t mind sacrificing his body for the team. The crafty guard with a good low dribble will get better at finishing around the tin as his body develops. He’s a loyal Lancaster student so he did very well during the drill sessions.
