First off, I would like to thank Mike Melton and Basketball Spotlight staff for allowing me to share my experiences with the world. I would also like to thank God for the gift of basketball and my parents who continue to support me. This will be my last entry because basketball is over for me this summer. The rest of my summer consists of getting stronger, better, and faster while preparing for this upcoming high school season. 

This past week was packed with basketball! It was the best week of the summer! I went to Hoop Group Future All American Camp and played with some of the best talent around. Then I had the opportunity to go to Syracuse Elite Camp before I headed down to North Carolina for CP3 camp. I gave my all at each of the camps. I played well at CP3 and made the Dunk Dog All American game. It was a really good experience and a lot of fun. I played alongside Nazi Reid, Atiba Taylor, Damon Harge, Robert Woodard and more. Yeah, we were having fun, but as soon as we got in the game, everything changed; it got really competitive. My team ended up winning by two. This has been an incredible summer of basketball, and I am looking forward to getting better and starting high school. 

Once again, I would like to thank Mike Melton for selecting me to do the Diary of a Baller. It has been great sharing my life with you! See you at the JEM All Star Classic this weekend!

Garden State Showdown Class Of 2018

Tavon Jones scored at the buzzer as the Orange Team defeated the Blue Team 73-72 in the Garden State Showdown of the 5th Annual J.E.M. All Star Classic. Both teams came to play and it turned out to be a thriller to the end. 

Garden State Showdown Top Performers

MVP- Tavon Jones (Linden, NJ)- This was Jones type of game. Up and down and isolations in which he relishes. The Linden product was on a mission to show he’s one of the purest scorer’s in the state and he answered the bell. In the isolation situations Jones broke down his defenders and found the bottom of the hole most of the afternoon. On defense he got showed his speed as he stole the rock at half court and scored the game winning bucket. I love this kid’s heart and determination. He impressed some of the national high school scouts that were in the building. No question he was the MVP.

Jared Kimbrough Forward (Neptune, NJ)- Kimbrough was a beast inside. He collected rebounds none stop and scored on put backs with ease. I like how he was able to collect himself before he went back up to get the bucket. He has the skills to go to the perimeter but I enjoy his motor on the blocks. He seemed determined to grab every rebound in sight. He has the length, skill and motor to be a sneaky prospect down the road.

Raymond Bethea Guard (Atlantic City, NJ)- America’s Playground has been a dominant force in South Jersey basketball for years and now they just added Bethea. This kid seems to grow every time I see him and add some swagger to his game. During the Garden State Showdown he showed extreme versatility with his ability to handle the rock and score with his size. He also collected some boards in the process. His confidence continues to grow and before you know it he should be a name to know in the Garden State.

Nick Hohenstein Guard (Middletown, NJ)- Nick is a hard-nosed tempo setter with some good skills. He can either score the rock or make things happen for his team. I like how he doesn’t back down from any competition and sometimes makes it look easy. I think he’s headed to CBA which will be a great spot to spend his high school career.

Reggie James Guard (Trenton, NJ)- James is slated as the top rising frosh in Mercer County and he didn’t disappoint. He excels in transition and in scoring opportunities. He has the body of a high school sophomore right now and the scoring mentality to go with it. A super steal and buzzer beater by Jones is the reason he didn’t leave with the MVP honors.Trenton Catholic is the cream of the crop in Mercer County and now they have added a real good one.

Roderick Massenat Guard (Trenton, NJ)- His cousin is former TCA and Drexel University standout Franz Massenat so this kid has it in his genes. You can see the potential oozing through his veins especially when he picks his spots to attack. He has the size and instincts to be a special player and he showed it during this event. He has a mixture of point guard and shooting guard skills that definitely translates to the next level. Now he needs to stay humble and let his game develop.

Najohn Dickerson Forward (Trenton, NJ)- Dickerson showed some extra stuff in his game yesterday. I didn’t realize he developed some perimeter skills and even a jump shot. He seemed very relaxed handling the rock and pulling up. I like how he has expanded his game which should help the Iron Mikes of Trenton Catholic when he arrives in September.

Ricky Bailey (Trenton, NJ)- Bailey was a pure rebounding machine and finisher. I has good leaping ability and an eye for the cup. When he gets in position to score jumps at the opportunity. On the next level he will have to develop his ball handling skills and ability to create an open look but right now he has one of the best motors around.

Cartier Bowman Forward (Ewing, NJ)- Another sneaky prospect in this event was Bowman. He wiry, very athletic and gets off the ground in a hurry. On offense he can finish along the baseline and around the tin. He also like a gazelle when he running the floor. On defense he block shots consistently and is a force on the glass.

Donovan Ryland Guard (Hamilton, NJ)- A few of the national scouts appreciated the toughness of this guard. Ryland is no non sense especially when he’s running the show. He’s not into the show time type of game but instead lets the substance of his game speak. I like how he was getting into the teeth of the defense and making things happen.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Class Of 2016

In the highest scoring J.E.M. All Star Classic ever the North Team defeated the South team 127-101. This game featured some of the best players in the country and was a huge success. Here are our top performers beginning with the North Squad. 

J.E.M. All Star Classic Top Performers

MVP: Aaron Clarke Guard (Parsippany, NJ)- Clarke started the game of draining a trey and that was a just a preview of what to come. He went on to knock down 5 more treys while leading his team to the victory. Along with stroking the pill Clarke also showed the ability to set up teammates and setting the tempo. He has made the transition to the point guard spot.

Armoni Sexton Forward (Paterson, NJ)- Sexton had an argument for MVP as he played an outstanding game. He ran the floor like a deer while catching a few lobs for dunks and finishing easy in transition. On the defensive side he was a ball hawk and tenacious rebounder. The “Live Wire” motor is something serious and will help him catch major attention in high school.

Jahvon Quinerly Guard (Englewood, NJ)- “Inferno” made things look very easy once again in the scoring column. He gave us a combination of deep bombs and mid-range pull ups. His fluid handle and confidence with the pill makes you love his game. Hudson Catholic got a great grab with this kid. They have one of the best combo guards in America.

Nazi Reid Forward (Asbury Park, NJ)- The #1 prospect in the region left Basketball Spotlight in impressive fashion. He gave us a taste of his improved ball handling and passing. He also ran the floor well while also finishing above the rim. He’s an intimidating force and he showed it in this event. This kid has the chance to be someone very special down the road. The loaded Roselle Catholic just got richer with the arrival of Reid.

Atiba Taylor Guard (Hackensack, NJ)- Taylor enjoyed the atmosphere while dropping dimes to some of the best players in the country. He gave us some of his playground skills while displaying a tricky handle and no look passes. He has been one of the most tested point guards throughout his Spotlight career. Everyone in the country knows this kid.

Justin Winston Forward (Bloomfield, NJ)- Winston was another piece of this loaded North squad. He showed his face up game and finishing ability in transition. I like how he plays hard on both ends of the floor and shows great potential when on the floor. He also had a great Basketball Spotlight career.

Charles Pride Guard (Syracuse, NY)- Pride is just born to score the basketball and he showed that Saturday. Whether it was a lay-up in transition or a follow up after grabbing a rebound. He continues to grow physically and now his confidence is through the roof. He was one of the best pure scorers to come through Basketball Spotlight. Please keep an eye on this kid.

Mike Adams-Woods Guard (Syracuse, NY)- Rounding out the North Squad was Adams-Woods. The lefty was great pushing the rock up and down the floor and showing the passing skills that can make him special. He has the enact ability to make everyone around him better. It was a joy to watch him these last two years.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Class Of 2016

J.E.M. All Star Classic Top Performers

Cameron Reddish Guard (Norristown, PA)-“The Prince” finished off his Spotlight career in impressive fashion. The lanky guard showed he could play either back court spot with dribble drives and tough jump shots. He gets anywhere he wants on the floor and has one of the smoothest games to come through our circuit. Mark my words, this kid is going to be a star one day.

Shemar Robinson Guard (Trenton, NJ)- Robinson started out a little anxious but settled down and went to work. The Capital City product showed explosiveness when attacking the hole and really impressed us with his court vision. He plays every possession like it’s his last and will turn out to be a good prospect very soon.

Marcus Littles Forward (Cheltenham, PA)- Littles was a monster inside for the South team. He’s very light on his feet for a player his size and displays a feathery touch near the cup. I like how his post moves are developing and the explosiveness his shows when finishing off plays. On the high school level he will become one of the best post players in the region for sure.

Louis King Forward (Mount Holly, NJ)- King had a chance to play against some of his AAU teammates and stood out. His handle has reached another level and now he looks like a top tier wing player. He can create space off the bounce and knock down the jumper off the dribble. Don’t be surprised if he becomes one of the top prospects in the country down the road.

Corey Greer Guard (Middle Township, NJ)- South Jersey is rarely known for their toughness but Greer is a different breed. He led the South squad in scoring by nailing a few mid-range jumpers and tough finishes in traffic. He had a serious showdown with lockdown defender Luther Muhammad in which he showed he could get buckets against anyone. I love his grit and overall feel for the game.

Isaiah Mucius Forward (Brooklyn, NY)- Mucius is another forward oozing with potential. He stand about 6’6 now but projects to be about 6’9 when it’s all said and done. His first step off the dribble is very quick and he can hit the step back jumper if needed. The physical attributes and his improving game gives him a great shot to be a Top 100 player on the high school level.

Brandon Slater Forward (Centreville, MD)- Slater is a transition demon and shows most of his game finishing off plays. I love his athleticism as he plays above the rim whenever he gets a chance. He also isn’t afraid to pull the trey ball from behind when left opened.

Jahvon Quinerly 2014 Player Of The Year

The Basketball Spotlight tournament season has come to an end and now it’s time to give out our awards for the season. We will begin with the Class of 2018. 

Basketball Spotlight Class Of 2018 Award Winners 

Player Of The Year: Jahvon Quinerly (Team IZOD) 
Quinerly won several Spotlight titles while playing first with the Playaz then rejoining his Supreme Team partners with Team IZOD. The smooth shooting combo guard hit one of the biggest shots in Spotlight history when he nailed a trey at the buzzer during the AC Showcase. During the course of the season he impacted the game every time he stepped on the floor and was a proven winner.

Most Outstanding Player: Nazi Reid (Team IZOD) 
Since 6th grade we pegged Reid as the best prospect in the region and he lived up to the hype. This season he took it to the national stage as he dominated the Spotlight circuit, AAU Nationals and several national camps. This kid has already picked up a few Division 1 offers and received “The Stamp”. He’s one of the best prospects to come through Basketball Spotlight period.

Sportsmanship Award: Cameron Reddish (Team Final) 
Team Final as a team wasn’t as successful as they were in the past but Reddish still came to play every tournament and put up the necessary numbers. He turned up his intensity and tried to carry his squad to victory every time he stepped on the floor. Reddish is another member of this very special Class of 2018. This kid has star written all over him.

Scholar Athlete Award: Myles Dread (Team Takeover) 
While reading his Diary Of A Baller we learned how intelligent this kid really was. He epitomizes the term student athlete because of his work in the classroom and on the basketball court. It was a privilege having him as a part of Basketball Spotlight that last few years and his parents must be extremely proud.

Coach Of The Year: Kiela Brevard (Playaz) 
The parity on our circuit made this a tough decision but when you look at his team last season and the progress they showed this year it was a great choice. Brevard led his young squad to several championships including the Tip Off Classic and Funsport. I had to manage different egos and keep everyone motivated in which he did a good job.

Best Prospect: Marvin Bagley (WACG) 
At the AC Showcase Bagley showed he was the #1 player in America. He played above the rim all weekend and provided us with some of the best highlights in Spotlight history. This kid’s dominance carried on for the rest of the season as he led WACG to another AAU final four. He also received “The Stamp” and will go down as one of the bets in Spotlight history.

Best Playmaker: Jaquaye James (Playaz) 
James spent his season making a name for himself by breaking down defenders. It was impossible to keep this kid out the lane and topped it off by dropping some sweet dimes. His old school style of play is something that’s needed by more guards of today. He’s one of the few that actually helps everyone get better.

Best Shooter: Darius Garland (WACG) 
This kid pulls up from the parking lot when he’s shooting. It was a pressure packed atmosphere in AC and delivered by shooting bombs all weekend. His range and accuracy is tremendous for a player this young. He can hit it deep off the dribble or on the catch.

Best Scorer: Charles Pride (Gym Rats) 
Pride got buckets all season long. Teams tried strategies to slow this kid down but he kept putting the ball in the hole. During the year his confidence seemed to grow and he numbers reflected his new swagger. This kid is just a flat out natural scorer.

Best Defender: Armoni Sexton (Playaz) 
Sexton used his motor to block shots and grab every rebound in sight. When players thought they easy buckets Sexton flew in to reject shots into the glass. He also hit the glass like a mad man while living up to his name “Live Wire”. You have to appreciate how he approaches the game.

Most Improved: Marcus Little (Team Final) 
Last season Little was just learning the landscape of AAU basketball. But his season he turned into a dominant force on the blocks. He now has decent footwork and touch when shooting the rock. He trimmed down and now runs the floor better. He turned himself into a good prospect heading into high school.

Scottie Lewis Class Of 2019

The Basketball Spotlight tournament circuit has come to an end. Now it’s time for us to give out our season ending reports. Next we will do the Class of 2019. 

Basketball Spotlight Class Of 2019 Award Winners 

Player Of The Year: Scottie Lewis (Team RIO National) 
“The Show” was injured during the Grand Finale but his body of work was too impressive to deny him the award. Lewis’s arrival and play launched Team RIO into one of the best 7th Grade teams in America. His explosive athleticism set him apart from peers and he has one of the best motors in the game. He became the name to know on the Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade circuit.

Most Outstanding Player: Terrence Williams (Team Takeover) Williams was on fire for most of the season. The power forward displayed a killer instinct and the skill set to take his game to the next level. His play helped Team Takeover win the DMV Takeover, AC Showcase, Grand Finale and a final four run at the AAU Nationals. The scary part is word has him reclassifying into the Class of 2020.

Sportsmanship Award: Bryan Antoine (Team RIO National) 
The Quiet Assassin took his game to another level this year. He stepped out his shell and became the aggressive player we predicted a few years ago. Antoine combines supreme athleticism with a deadly jump shot. At times he made an argument as the best player on the circuit.

Coach Of The Year: Junior Burrough (Team Takeover) 
Burrough guided the TTO squad to 3 Spotlight championships and an AAU final four finish. He had a loaded with roster therefore had to maintain a good rotation and push the correct buttons at the right time. This season he finally broke through and snatched few banners. Congrats.

Best Scorer: Cole Anthony (Rens) 
“The Natural” was outstanding during the MDC. He scored at will from the perimeter and attacking the basket. His played willed them to the Gold Ball and cemented Anthony as one of the best scorer’s to come through these parts. He simply got it down when he attended the Spotlight events.

Best Playmaker: Fahmir Ali (Team Final) 
Ali made this Team Final team relevant this season. He baked defenders with his slow motion crossover and either drained a jumper or dropped a great dime. He came out this season to prove he was one of the better point guards in the region and proved his point.

Best Prospect: Dontae Scott (Team Nelson) 
Scott went to the perimeter this season and showed vast improvement. He’s now comfortable shooting the trey ball and creating off the bounce. His size and motor has him looking like a guy the high school and college coaches will be getting to know very soon. Philadelphia has another stud coming in Scott.

Most Improved Player: Tariq Ingraham (Team Nelson) 
This season Ingraham became a dominant post player. I now understands how to get deep position and convert near the basket. I has massive size and has a chance to be one of the best big men in the country in the future.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Class of 2018 

The 2018 J.E.M. All Star Game was full of highlights and featured some of the top players in the region. The North Team won the game by 2 points and Team Scan's Aaron Clarke took home the All Star Game MVP by nailing 5 three pointers. Other MVP contenders consisted of Jahvon Quinerly, Armoni Sexton, Cameron Reddish & Nazreon Reid. This class has a chance to be something very special.
