Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The Basketball Spotlight Top 10 8th Grade teams are listed below. The AC Showcase turned had a huge effect on our rankings. Remember these rankings are based on our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team RIO National: After losing to CP3 by 3 points Team Rio National rebounded to win the AC Showcase. At times they showed pure dominance down in America’s Playground. They will be the hunted heading into the MDC before ending things off at the Grand Finale.

2. Team Florida: Team Florida went toe to toe with some of the big boys in the country and had a good showing. Hopefully we can get them to come to the Grand Finale National Championship to finish the season off.

3. DC Premier: Premier had some tough sledding playing in the super division at the AC Showcase. But I still believe they have the pieces to run the table and win the Grand Finale come June.

4. Team Takeover: TTO made their Spotlight debut and split four games (2-2). I like some of the pieces they have and they are likely to attend the Grand Finale since it’s in their backyard.

5. Team Final: Checking in at #5 is Team Final. They wanted a pool in the Super bracket in AC and proved they were worthy by winning the Orange Division with ease.

6. Harlem Jets: This tough bunch ran into a buzz-saw Team Final squad in the championship of the AC Showcase. I think they can bounce back and spoil the party down at the Grand Finale National Championship.

7. New Heights: NH is supposed to return to action at for the MDC. I’m anxious to see how they gear in Neptune in preparation for the Grand Finale National Championship.

8. NY Rens: The Rens also will be entering the MDC looking for their first banner of the season. They have enough fire power to win the title in Neptune and crash the party at the Grand Finale.

9. CIA Bounce: The boys from Canada showed total dominance at the AC Showcase before running into eventual champion Team Final. They will be returning to action for the MDC.

10. Play Hard: Playing without Mikeal Jones Play Hard still showed some fight at the AC Showcase. They have earned the right to play at the Grand Finale National Championship and we look forward to seeing them in Maryland.

Special Note: CP3 All Stars participated in the AC Showcase and we really believe they are one of the top teams in the country but we felt it was unfair for their players and the other teams to rank them. Since they didn't complete the event it was too difficult to say where they belonged in our rankings.

One On One Feat. Kennedy Chandler (Team IZOD)

Kennedy Chandler (Team IZOD)

Kennedy Chandler has been a proven winner for years with Memphis War Eagles and We All Can Go All Stars. The floor general also was a major name around the country when it came to the camp circuit. This season he spiced things up when he traveled across the country to suit up with the loaded Team IZOD 6th Grade bunch. Basketball Spotlight had a chance to holler at Chandler and here’s what he had to say.

One On One Feat. Kennedy Chandler

BS: What prompt the move for you to come east and play with Team IZOD?
KC: I think it’s a great opportunity to play with Team Izod because it is great organization, and I always wanted to play for Coach Reggie. When i watched them beat WACG of couple of times when he coached the 8th grade, that really motivated me to want to play for him, because I like how he coaches his guards. Besides my dad coaching me with the Nightrydas Elite, playing with top kids around the country is great.

BS: What has been the fondest moment of your young AAU career?
KC: Meeting new kids (different players) getting to know the players not just on the court, but off the court. My dad have always taught me to build relationships with other coaches and players. And of course accomplishing the main goal, winning National Championships, tournaments, and approving my game by staying in the lab.

BS: Where do you think you rank against the other top guards in the country?
KC: I never really think about rankings right now, but I think I'm at least top 5 as far guards. But point guards, top of the list.

BS: How has the experience been playing for Team IZOD?
KC: The experience has been good, playing for a great organization, learning their system and getting to know the kids very well. We have won the Atlantic City Showcase and right now we are 8-1 in the NYBL.

BS: Who are some of the top players you have competed against?
KC: Zion Harmon, Jaden Springer, Seth Wilson, and Jaden Jones.

BS: Who would you consider as the #1 player in your class and why?
KC: It’s really hard to say, but I will say Zion Harmon right now, I've been competing against Zion since the 2nd grade and he pretty much has a complete game. But you have players like Donnell Harris, Trey Patterson, and myself trying to reach that point.

BS: What camps will you be attending this summer?
KC: Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp, Adidas Phenom and many more.

BS: What are the strong assets in your game?
KC: Court vision, shoot the 3, mid-range, or floater. As a point guard, I make plays for other people, attack the lanes. But most important I play 94 feet, I play defense on the ball and off the ball. I take pride in my defense.

BS: What part of your game needs improvement?
KC: Getting stronger as far as my body. Right now I have a strength and conditioning coach that I worked with and it’s working out great, along with me also eating properly.

BS: Tell us something we don’t know about you?
KC: I'm very committed to the game and also working hard every day to improve my game, whether if it’s in the gym with my strength and conditioning coach, my skills and drills coach, or working out with my dad. I refuse to take the game I love lightly, very dedicated to the game.

James Bishop Plane View Headed To John Lucas Camp

Hello Basketball Spotlight World,

This is James Bishop and I’m back to tell you how my week went.

Monday I was well rested because for once I went to sleep at a good time. I got up ate breakfast that my mom cooked and got ready for school. After school I went to St. Benedict’s workout from 4 to 6 then I took a little break before getting at it again from 6:00 to 7:30. After the workout was over I went to my friend’s house to spend the night. His mom is my school teacher so I stay there sometimes so I don’t have to get up early for school.

On Tuesday I woke up, ate breakfast and got right to busting my school work. I like being home schooled because I can learn things at a faster pace and it challenges me a lot more. After school I went straight to Western Tech for workouts. I got up around 300 in game shots and worked on a lot of ball handling in preparation of the John Lucas Camp in a few days. Later I went home, did my physical workout and studied the game with my brother before I went to bed.

On Wednesday I woke up and did the same school routine. After I waited for my God brother to pick me up. We did weight lifting and conditioning for one hour and thirty minutes. After that I went to DRU Hill Y to workout at 7:30. Then we finally went home ordered some pizza and went to sleep.

Thursday after school I went to Western tech and in a hard two hour workout. I was the only person there so I was able to get in a lot of reps and focus a lot better. After the workout I was supposed to go home, get my plane ticket and pack for my trip but my brother got a new TV to play the game on. The graphics looked so good I couldn’t do anything else but play. My mother was upset that I didn’t pack or even take a shower yet. The next day I spend traveling to Houston and getting rest for the camp.

Saturday I woke up early and ate breakfast. I started to get my mind and body set for the long day. I stretched out and listened to music until it was time to go to camp. I think I did well the first day. I worked on every aspect of my game and the competition was good. I think they really wanted to see who the real hoopers were because we went from 12-8 with a lunch in between. If you don’t live this basketball life you wouldn’t have lasted.

Now it’s Sunday and I’m headed back to Maryland. The John Lucas Camp had great drills and competition. I went hard in every drill and played very good. I felt like I was one of the best players in the camp. But now I’m ready to head back and spend the rest of my day with my mom for Mother’s Day.

See you guys next week.

 James “Buckets” Bishop.

Shaq Shows Love For Armoni Sexton!

The Playaz Basketball Club high school teams traveled to Houston, Texas for the 3rd session of the EYBL. During this trip their 15 and under crew played against a team featuring the son of Shaquille O’Neal. After getting the win members of the Playaz organization talked to  Shaq about what happened to Armoni Sexton and the future Hall Of Famer decided to take a team picture with the group while holding Sexton’s #1 jersey. Shout out to the Playaz and NJ born Shaquille O’Neal for a great moment.

Team RIO Clapping High School Teams!

It’s not unusual for 8th Grade teams to play up when the spring time roll around in preparation for high school next fall and to give college coaches an early glance at their young talent. But Team RIO National has not only played up but has been very successful thus far. They started their quest at the Hoop Group Pitt Jam Fest going 4-1 before losing to Team Melo 16’s in the semifinals. Their next stop was Hoop Group Hoop Fest in Pennsylvania where they won the 15U Platinum division. Then finally this past weekend they entered the Nike 15U EYBL stop in Houston and went 4-0 while advancing to the semi-finals but had to leave early to catch a flight. This team is really shaping up to one of the best to ever come through this area.

Metro Flyers Join Celtics Family!

The I 10 Celtics recently came on the scene and already has caused waves. The California based group first expanded to the Midwest by scooping up one of the best 8th Grade Teams All Ohio Red. Now it seems they have invaded the East Coast by bringing in Northeast power Metro Flyers. Metro Flyers will be bringing some good talent to the table and will be attempting to plant the Celtic flag on the East Coast. Introducing the Metro Celtics.

Merritt Heads To College

All you guys might especially those who attended the John Lucas Camp in Houston that Brian Merritt has decided to take an assistant coaches position at Arizona State University. Merritt was a major force in helping John Lucas Enterprise explode as a national brand. Through his hard work and determination he became a household name in the youth basketball world. We congratulate and wish Merritt good luck on the college level.

Tyus "Kid Mamba" Battle

Basketball Spotlight is proud to announce that Tyus “Kid Mamba” Battle has decided to attend the University of Michigan. Battle was one of the players that laid the foundation of Basketball Spotlight. He was one of our first young featured players during his years with Team Battle. He led them to several championships while taking home a couple Player Of The Year Honors and Mr. Memorial Day Awards. On the camp circuit he quickly became a national name after dominating some of the biggest events around the country. He received the “The Stamp” in the fall of his 7th Grade year and will have to go down as one of the most celebrated middle school players in Spotlight history. He capped his career off with one of the best Diary Of A Baller projects we ever had.

Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Tyus and his family on this big decision. We will never forget the moments you shared with us and how your play helped Basketball Spotlight become the brand it is. We are proud of you and wish you the best in all your future endeavors.

MyKel Kelley

Last summer MyKel Kelley traveled to the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenon Camp to prove that he was one of the best guards in the country. He did more than just catch our eye as he dominated most of the weekend, made the All Star Game and finished the #6 ranked player overall in his class. The smooth point guard can either run the show or set up teammates. Right now he’s rocking with Team Future and had a very good AAU season. Check out some of his highlights below.

Diary Of A Baller: James "Buckets" Bishop (Baltimore, MD) Entry #5

James "Buckets" Bishop

Hello Basketball Spotlight World, This is James Bishop again and I’m here to tell you how my week went.

Monday I was tired because I returned from my Houston trip very late. I begged my mom to let me stay home and she did. I slept in late and got up around noon. I ate and jumped in the shower before studying for a while. My next stop was the Energy Fitness Gym where instead of working out I played some 5 on 5 with the older guys. After playing the games for two hours I hit Little Caesars Pizza for dinner. I ended my night off doing some ball handling with my brother before going to bed.

Tuesday I was back at school. After school I ran two miles and ran some hills. Afterwards I went to St. Benedicts to work out from 5:00 to 6:30. Then from 6:30 to 7:30 I ran some game with some collage guys that were in the building. When I play with them I like dime teammates, play good defense and hit my open shots. My brother says that’s how you stay on the floor. Later I went home to do some physical workouts and homework. I capped my night off playing NBA 2K with my brother. I got my revenge because he got the best of me the night before. On

Wednesday I got up ready for school. We had a quiz and I’m confident that I did well. After school I waited for my God brother to come and get me. Once he arrived he took me to St. Benedicts and put up some shots on the gun. Today was a good workout because we were able to shoot for an hour and a half without interruption. After shooting with ran games with the guys before going home for my physical workout and homework.

Thursday, I got up ready for school. After school I went to Dru Hill to workout with my God Brother. When we arrived this lady gave us a hard time getting in because of our ID. We were a little upset because of the long ride to get there but instead we drove to Energy Fitness and hooped for two hours. I also ran two miles and worked on my ball handling. Later my brother dropped me off and I was able to chill with my niece since I finished all my homework in school.

Friday, I got up ready for school. After school my brother dropped his daughter off and since he was off work early he was able to work my God brother and I pout for two hours. After the workout we went to Subway to grab something to eat before going home to take a shower and get some sleep. I have a long day tomorrow.

Saturday, I woke up around 8:30 and workout with my brother. After working out I ate breakfast before my mother and I dropped my brother off to work. Then she took me to Dru Hill for my next workout. I worked out for about two hours and then had a chance to catch up with my little cousin Jermaine. He has been punished for a while so I haven’t seen him lately. I hooped for about an hour before going home to do my physical workout. The rest of the night I spent with my friends we went to Buffalo Wild Wings and I stayed there until about 11 o’clock when I returned home and got ready for bed.

Sunday was a laid back day. I chilled with my mom at first, then I went to play ball before returning home to get ready for school the next day.

See you guys next week,

James Bishop
