Terrence "Total Package" Clarke

Hello Basketball World,

My name is Terrence "Total Package" Clarke. I am blessed and honored to have a chance to give you guys an inside of my life on a weekly basis as an all around person, student, and basketball player! I would like to thank Expressions Elite for putting me to the test to play against the best of the best and BballSpotlight for recognizing the hard work I put in day in and day out in the gym.

Boston born and raised. I am an eighth grader that attends The Rectory School, a junior boarding school in Connecticut. I play for Expressions Elite, a Nike sponsored program. Expressions is a great basketball program that is the definition of family. They've made me strive and work as hard as I can to put myself in great situations. I also focus on my school work. I currently have A's and B's. As of now, I am coming to an end of my spring break and these few weeks out of school, and in the gym has been really hard. Every time I come home, I work on my game with my coaches before going out with any of my friends.

The first week I was let out on Thursday and had time to workout before the weekend. My team and I had Championship Weekend for Pennsylvania. This last session showed me that our team can be a contending team to be top in the country! It was definitely an enthusiastic showing and great experience for me and my squad. Even though we fell short, I learned a lot about myself. Second week, I worked out quite a bit with no days off for the weekend. Elite 75, a basketball showcase for middle school players on the east coast, was on that Sunday so I couldn't let up on the grind. This was a great way to display my talent in front of great prep high schools. I got in the gym and stayed solid for the weekend. I worked very well with a high motor and competed in all the games we had. After the showcase, I got lots of love from the coaches there which meant it was a great showing. This week, I had days off due to snow storms but I still got in the gym to play in pickup games. We also had our first Expressions Combine Training Camp. It was lots of fun playing with my 15u and 16u team for EYBL! I'm looking forward to playing on one of the biggest stages in the world in front of the best coaches. This will be the beginning of the show.

This was a little summary of my break as I go back to school for the start of my spring. As the weeks go, I will detail what I do day by day. For my spring sport, I believe I will try to play either Baseball or Lacrosse! I hope throughout the next few weeks of this diary, I can motivate and drive kids to better themselves as people, not just as basketball players. This was a little sample of more to come. I would like to thank BballSpotlight once again for this great opportunity! Terrence Clarke signing out...

Zion Harmon State Champion

8th Grader Zion Harmon led Bowling Green to the Kentucky High School State Championship. Harmon scored 18 points in the finals which helped Bowling Green win their first championship in school history. Now the question is if Harmon will stay in Kentucky or return to the DMV area for high school?

Zion’s dad Mike Harmon chimed in, “Zion has a number of options. I will let him grow and develop through the summer with Boo Williams on the Nike 17U EYBL Circuit. Kentucky Basketball, with its high level coaching, unbelievable fans and fervent love the game has been great experience for Zion. Ultimately we have to make best decision for his development” said Harmon.

So I guess we will have to see what happens next with Harmon and Basketball Spotlight will keep you guys posted.

Terrence Clarke And Teammates On Trip

How's the Basketball World doing?

I would like to welcome you all to my second BballSpotlight Diary. This week was a very up and going week due to trips around New England for sports and my team’s basketball tournament. I didn't have classes due to March Experimental Learning Program (MELP) which is something my school participates in every year. We go around New England and learn information about sports.

Once I got back to school, I fell asleep and woke up for my first day back from break. I was in a good mood due to no classes. My first trip was to the Tennis Hall of Fame! This wasn't the best trip but I did learn that tennis is a fun sport. The tallest Tennis player is 6'10! Foot speed and his use of wingspan must be huge! Serena Williams is in my eyes, the Greatest of All Time. After I got back to school, I worked out for about 30 minutes and then played two on two with my basketball teammates for the rest of the 45 minutes.

Tuesday was a long, tiring, and wild day. We started our day off by going to tour Fenway Park! To be technical, the Red Sox have been beating the Yankees from day one! Also, the green monster of Fenway is ridiculously huge. Tickets to watch the game on the green monster is $650 against the Cubs! Then, I went to the TD Garden to tour the New England Museum. I saw jerseys, sculptures, pictures and actual items from the Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, and the Red Sox! It's great to learn your history on where you come from. To end the day, we watched a Bruins game vs Senators at the TD Garden. Unfortunately, the Bruins lost 2-3. The game came very close and went down to the wire.

Due to getting in bed late because of the Bruins game, I woke up lousy and tired. We went to Gillette Stadium where the New England Patriots play. Seeing what the patriots were made of shows that chasing your dreams and never giving up is a step to succession. After, we went rock climbing. That was my first time and it was very challenging. It was also fascinating when you basically had to get pulled back to the ground. To end the day, we had ice cream and had time to socialize with each other.

The most anticipated day of the week was Thursday. We was heading to the Basketball Hall of Fame! We got to see the greatest player’s bios and photos. Seeing Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and more makes me want to work even harder than I'm working now, so I can see my own name too. We then went on the basketball court to shoot around and have fun. After, we went to Dave and Busters to chill and rest to enjoy our time with each other. To end the night, I played lots of basketball and 21 games with my teammates.

Friday was the best day to observe a lot. We toured UConn's facilities. This showed me that putting in the work will pay off. I got too see football, basketball, track and more players and athletic trainers in action. It was a fun sighting of the University. I then went home to my hometown, Boston. I stayed at the gym until 10:30 to 11 o'clock playing pickup with older kids and kids my age for the night to prepare myself for the weekend tournament.

Saturday was an easy going day. I relaxed and iced my knees before my three and five o'clock games. There was a countless number of people coming to watch us play & there was so much hype. We blew the teams out by more than 20 to put us in a good place in our pool to advance.

Chip chasing day. Sunday was the day to go after the championship for the tournament. We beat our first two opponents by 20 points showing that we were hungry. Even though we were tired and some of us injured, we played the championship game right after our win. The game started quick. Our opponents jumped out to a lead quickly. We cut the lead down to four by the half after being down 12. Second half, we cut the lead to two after being down eight. Sadly, we couldn't complete the job and lost by 12 points. As the new week begins, I'll be continuing back to my regular school routine and work towards playing up in EYBL. Tune in next week as I update you all on how my week went and how my weekend goes as of practices or tournaments. Until then, everyone stay safe and bless up!

Boston Spartans Program Celebrates

Boston Spartans have developed to one of the top grammar school AAU programs in the New England area. They won a few Basketball Spotlight banners among other championships. Joe Chatman has put together and program that continues on the rise so we decided to sit down with the Bean Town native and find out his secret.

From The Directors Desk: Joe Chatman (Boston Spartans)

BS: How was the Boston Spartans AAU program established?
JC: The Spartans were established in the Spring of 2009. It started out as simply a place where kids can come and workout with me lol, when I actually could still play lol. Parents continually asked me about coaching and starting a youth team. The program grew from 1 team to 5 very solid teams.

BS: What is the program mission for Boston Spartans?
JC: The mission of the Spartans program is use basketball as a vehicle to achieve a better education while learning the game of basketball in its purest form. Our goal isn't to produce McDonalds All-Americans, it's to produce the best student-athletes we possibly can.

BS: Who are some of the top players that have come through your program?
JC: We have had so many great players come thru our program: Mike Rodriquez, (SUI '17'), Kahari Beaufort (UTenn Martin '17'), Markus Neale, Damion Smith, Ernie Chatman, Alijah Rue (Undecided) and Kellan Grady (Davidson '21') to name a few.

BS: Who are some of the top prospects you currently have in your program?
JC: Current Top players: Kingsley Breen, Nasier Camp, Josh Morrisett, Tony Felder, Zion Simmons, Tay Williams, Daijon Burton, Darmani Santiago, and many more.

BS: What are some of the challenges of building an AAU program?
JC: Most challenging thing I would say is getting families to trust you. There are so many AAU teams that are focused on wrong things. The next challenge is making sure your players understand the importance of academics. We start at a young at the age of 10, so maintaining that balance is always tough for young players.

BS: Where do you see the Boston Spartans program in 5 years?
JC: In 5 years our goal is to be a better program than we were yesterday. Another goal is to open up more opportunities for the inner city kids of Boston. It's nice to win championships but it's even nicer to have families receives letters from Prep/Catholic Schools stating that their son is going to school on full aid.

BS: What was your greatest moment with the Boston Spartans?
JC: Greatest Moments, that's tough Mike! We have had some great moments through the years on and off the court. Basketball moments are when we finished third in the country in 2012 Division 1 8th grade Nationals, winning 3 different age divisions in the BBall Spotlight MDC last spring, winning 4 Super Regional championship last spring. Academic moments is when Mike Rodriques and Kahari Beaufort played against each other this past college basketball season and both will be the first college graduates with D1 scholarships in the program.

BS: If I had a son in New England why would I choose Boston Spartans?
JC: Hopefully you would want your son to be a part of a family! To be pushed academically and basketball wise like never before. We stress playing the game the right way while maintaining your grades at a high level.

BS: Any parting shots?
JC: We would look to thank Mike Melton for all his support for the Boston Spartans... Keep doing what you’re doing, I know I speak for several programs when I say thanks for everything you do for grammar school AAU!

Hey Basketball World,

This is my third diary entry for BballSpotlight. This week was a calm and chill week. I didn't have a tournament or lots of plans for the weekend. I now went back and started classes. I didn't play lots of basketball through the week but I made use of my time most days to stay active.

Waking up late throughout the week, Monday was a slow day. I went to classes pretty sloppy but picked it up throughout the day. After the school day, my school had MELP affair. We all went into the gym and shared what we learned and pictures of us on MELP.

Tuesday, I picked up my body language and started my day on the right step. I went to classes and got most of my work done. After school, I went to baseball practice but I forgot my clothes. In result, I didn't participate in baseball. Wednesday, I started to put my mind towards leaving to go home for the weekend. After school, I went to baseball practice. I learned that I can't bat but I can catch and throw so I made a decision to move to track for the spring season.

Since school was pretty slow, I decided to make use of my day to play basketball. After my classes I iced my knees for the day to start track practice on Friday. After icing my knees, I went to our outside basketball court since the day wasn't as cold. I got some shots up with one of my teammates and got to have a mini sweat.

Starting Friday off, I knew I was heading home for the weekend so I stayed focused all day. After my classes, I went home to workout. Unfortunately, I didn't work out but I played basketball for the day. I played pickup and got some work in.

Saturday, I got in the gym early in the morning and got shots up. For the rest of the day, I stayed home and got some more rest with lots of my friends and had fun with them. Knowing I had to go back to school, I knew it was time to get in the gym and work. Sunday, my team had workouts and I went pretty late but got there to get some work in. After, I went to the gym and stayed there for the day. This week, I wasn't so busy and I had lots of time to settle down due to being hurt because of my knees.

Next weekend, I'll be playing in my first spring tournament for 15U. This week, I'll be managing my time more effectively and get ready to get to the chip for the weekend! Stay tuned for my next diary entry next, until then everyone bless up and stay in the books!

Terrence Clarke Huge Weekend

What's up Basketball World?

I’m glad to welcome you all to my fourth diary entry of my BBallSpotlight Diary. This week went by faster than usual for me because of my first spring tournament for 15U. There was lots of good teams to enjoy watching and I knew one of them was us so I had to get ready. My fatigue will definitely show for my next week of school. Even though, I still managed to get at least 50-100 push-ups and 100-300 toe raises and 150 squats in about 5-6 sets. I had enough good days at track to keep me in good shape.

When I woke up for school on Monday, I was still bothered by the way I lost my last 14U game. I thought about ways I can learn from the game and become a better leader for our squad. Heading into Atlantic City Showcase, we definitely have to patch up little mix ups. After school, I went outside on my schools basketball court and I worked on more of my ball handling with cones along with other objects to get around. I worked on my pull up, jump shots, and finishing moves. After dinner and study hall, I went to sleep quickly.

Tuesday, I woke up in a better mood. I didn't have much work to finish due to using my study hall time accordingly. Homework that was due within the next day or days following was completed instantly. After school, I had a fantastic day at track. I then went to the gym. I worked on my ball handling and more finishing moves. After study hall, I ate some cereal to finish the night and went to sleep.

Wednesday, I got more into the books. I completed my assignments so that my week would be easier. After school, during track I did crunches, push-ups and more conditioning work including running about a mile worth of distance. After school, I worked on all pull up jump shots that were off the dribble and combo dribble moves into my shot. Once I got back to my dorm, I was quick to sleep.

Knowing I was close to the weekend, I was getting more excited. After school, our track day was canceled due to the rain. So this was definitely the day to get in the gym. I worked on all moves to use in games. I used my time to work on hesitation pull-ups like Michael Porter and dribble moves with a little "Filllaaayyysss". Also, I worked on different dunks and trying to use my athleticism.

Friday was a calm and chill day. I finished all my work so I can have a good weekend and go into the next week without worrying. After school, I left to go to practice from 8-11. It was a good way to put plays in and work on the offense and defense we were going to use. After that, we went to sleep over my friend’s house with my teammates.

GAMEDAY! Saturday was time for the chicken. We had a game and it was out first game to test if we was ready for the next level with the talent we had. We proved why we're definitely one of the best teams in New England and maybe the country. We played together and made high level plays as a team. You can see we was having so much fun together. The second game was a forfeit so I got the chance to go home for a while. I then went back to my teammate’s house.

Sunday was championship day! We had three more games to get there. First game was a breeze. We played well and got the game over with. The second game was the main event of 15U. Expressions vs Playaz. There was a big crowd watching. I had a couple of high level plays with a big dunk down the middle from my teammate, Trey. That gave us a lot of momentum on our side and got us hype. We ended the game and won by a large margin. The championship game was based on our south team and Mass Rivals and our south team won so we couldn't play. We both took the championship home. As the new week begins, I'm going back to my routine of school, track, basketball then study hall. This new week will be work leading up to BballSpotlight's Atlantic City Showcase! I'll be working this week to advance my skill for the best 8th grade tournament this year. Tune in next week as I update you guys on how my week goes. Until then everyone stay blessed!
