Roddy Gayle

While most 8th Graders are shining on the middle school circuit Roddy Gayle is spending this spring getting numbers on the 16U Under Armor circuit playing with WE R 1. Gayle came into the season ranked #15 nationally in out Elite 80 rankings but is sure to move up next fall. Gayle has grown to 6’4 and shows a fluid game, explosiveness and shooting ability from the perimeter. WE R 1 middle school director Rennie Alston sees something big in Gayle. “Roddy’s all-around game that’s ahead of his peers. Along with great athleticism that will only get better as he grows into his body. Finally, his basketball IQ also separates him from others” said Alston.

Basketball Spotlight will continue to keep you guys posted on Gayle’s development and other top players from around the country. Stay tuned as we bring the latest news on the top middle schoolers.

What’s up Basketball Spotlight World?

Welcome to Journal Entry #7 for Ben Roy.

Monday: As the last couple weeks of school were ahead of me, I seemed to be getting more and more ready for high school, and also for the school year to be over. Waking up Monday is always hard but today seemed normal. I went to school and the day went by quickly, and since it was nice out I decided to get some shots up after school. I shot for about an hour and then later that night I did some lifting that included mostly legs. After the lifting I was pretty tired so I decided to chill the rest of the night.

Tuesday: Once again I woke up pretty energetic and was ready to start the day. My last official classes for the year were on Tuesday so I worked hard all day and was tired when I got home. I chilled for a little while when I got home and then I went outside and played 1 on 1 with my little brother for a while. It was good to take a chill day and recoup a bit.

Wednesday: On Wednesday, we had youth government day so I got a tour of the whole town and watched an actual court case. After that we all went out as a grade to get lunch so by the time we got back to school, it was time to leave. After school we had our annual teachers vs. students basketball game. The last time students beat the teachers was a long time ago so it was nice to beat the teachers. After the game, I headed over to hoop group for a workout. After the workout, one of my Rio teammates and I worked out with a current local D1 player. When I got home, I took a shower and called it a night.

Thursday: Thursday morning, I was feeling tired because I worked out for about 3 hours the night before. Thursday was our school picnic day for the whole grade so once again I got to miss all my classes. We all went to our local park and played games and ordered pizza as a grade. Later that night I headed up to Colts Neck to workout at I’m Possible. It’s always a good workout when I go, but this particular night had some real good talent in the gym.

Friday: Although Friday was a normal school day, the day went by super quick and it felt like we had no work at all. After school I got some shots up outside my house for about an hour. Shortly after, I had to get ready and dressed because that night was my 8th grade dance. Before the dance, we all went to one of my friend’s houses before to take pictures. After pictures, we walked to my school for the dance. The dance was fun and after everyone went to Applebee’s but I decided not to go because I had games in the morning.

Saturday: I woke up decently early because we had games pretty early in the morning. The two games we played we won pretty easily, but it was good to be back on the court with my team again. Since we haven’t played in a while, it took us about a half to get going, but once we did get going, there was no stopping us. After my games, I came home and showered and chilled for a little. After chilling out, I met up with some of my friends and we hung out that night. I left at about 9 pm because I knew I had to get home early to get mentally prepared and rest up for championship Sunday.

Sunday: I woke up probably the most hyped and energetic I have been in awhile. This was because in the semi-finals , we were playing against my old team, NJ Shore Shots. It was good to get back on the court and compete against some of my close friends and former teammates. I played well and earned player of the game. Although we won by 15, it felt like it was closer the whole way. In the finals, we faced Jersey Force 15U and it was a hard fought battle like always. But unfortunately, they ended up beating us by 3. Even though I didn’t have one of my better games, I tried keep my head up and played hard. Although we came up a little short this weekend, we went 3-1 overall and played pretty well as a team. Something we can build on heading into the summer. TIME TO GET BACK AT IT!

Thanks for checking in for Journal Entry #7, see you guys next week for my final entry

What’s up Basketball Spotlight World?

Welcome to my 8th and final journal entry for Ben Roy.

Monday: School was easy because now all we were doing was practicing for graduation. After school I decided to come home and chill for a bit and work out later. I headed up to I’m Possible later that night. It was a small class so I got a ton of reps in and it was good work.

Tuesday: Tuesday was field day at our school so all we did was play games all day long. It was really nice out so it was good to be outside all day. After school I decided to go to the beach with some of my friends. It was good to chill out with the boys and catch up. Later that night I went up to the park and shot around and worked out for about 2 hours on my own.

Wednesday: Wednesday was a very long day. Since graduation was the next day, all we did was practice what to do at graduation. Although it seemed fun to miss all of my classes, it really wasn’t fun practicing for 7 hours. After school I went right up to Hoop Group and worked out with some D1 college players and some high level high schools’ kids. We went at it for about an hour and a half and they definitely were not taking it easy on me. It was a really good workout.

Thursday: Today was the day I was finally graduating. It was crazy to think that the next chapter of my life was about to begin, but it also felt good knowing that I was going in the right direction. I had a half day so I decided to stay after school and play basketball with my friends. Then later that night, I graduated and we had an after party for all the graduates. We then went to one of my friend’s houses and I didn’t get home till after midnight. It was good to spend time with my classmates because everybody is going in a different direction next year.

Friday: Friday was our annual cut day, so no 8th graders went to school. I slept in for a bit and then I went and met up with one of my friends for breakfast. Since this was going to be one of the last times we were all together, most of the grade decided to hangout and go to the beach. I didn’t stay out long though because I wanted to go to Hoop Group in the afternoon to get a workout in. After working out, I went home to rest because I had a long day ahead of me the next day. I was invited to attend the Under Armour Next Combine Series in Manhattan.

Saturday: I had to wake up at 6 am to head up to New York City for the UA Next Combine. This event was probably one of the best basketball experiences I’ve had so far. It was a huge honor to be invited to such a great camp. I thought I played really well throughout the day and was happy with my performance in the 5 on 5 games. The camp was really well run and there was a ton of talent in the gym. After the combine my legs were dead, but it was my Mom’s birthday so we all got together for a family dinner and celebrated later that night.

Sunday: Sunday was a very chill day. After Saturday, I was very tired and run down so decided to chill out the whole day and take it easy. I was not going to touch a basketball today. I met up with some friends and went to the beach in the afternoon. It was Father’s Day, so we had a family dinner later that night.

I just want to thank Mike Melton & Basketball Spotlight for giving me this great opportunity to share my experiences over the last 8 weeks. Basketball Spotlight gives a great platform for middle school players to compete against the best competition with their tournaments and camps. They have definitely made me a better player over the last 4 years. Last but not least, I want to wish all my friends, teammates and fellow ballers in the Class of 2022 the best of luck next year in high school. The class 2022 is real strong and NJ is in good hands for years to come.

What’s up Basketball Spotlight World!!!!

Welcome to my 1st journal entry for Lou Hutchinson.

My Basketball Background: Born 3/20/2004, 6’3” Point Guard/Shooting Guard for Team Durant. Attending the Maret School for High school and will be playing for Varsity Coach Chuck Driesell.

Monday: Monday June 18th was two weeks after my 8th Grade graduation from the Georgetown Day School in Washington DC. Graduation was a great experience as I was chosen to be a Graduation Speaker by the faculty and students. Prior to Monday the 18th of June, I have been very busy with Strength Training twice a week; Maret Varsity Basketball Practice 2 to 3 times a week; Varsity Summer League Games at Dematha Summer League 2 to 3 times a week; JV Summer League once a week with Team Durant at Largo High School, the Jr. NBA Combine for the DMV Top 40, and occasional skills and shooting training at the LAB in my basement and at Sportfit in Bowie Maryland. On the 18th I awakened early to have therapy at 10:30 am in Virginia about an hour from my home. After coming home, I cleaned my room, put up my folded clothes and I ate quite a bit of food. At 2:30 pm my Mom drove me to Maret in Washington DC for an hour of weightlifting with the varsity team at 4 pm, followed by an hour practice at 5 pm. After practice I had a JV Summer League game at Largo High school with Team Durant at 7 pm. The Team played very well and we were triumphant. I wanted to focus on offensive aggressiveness and 94 foot defense. I was happy with the entire team’s effort throughout the game. After the game I went home and I crushed a delicious meal made by my Mom after which I played a few video games and then I fell out asleep!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday: On the 19th I woke up around 12 pm and had weight lifting practice with my varsity team at Maret at 4 pm, after which we had basketball practice at 5 pm. In practice we did skills work and some one on one to work on our defense and ability to score with limited dribbles. We finished practice with suicides and I went home that night to ice my knees and do my daily 200 push-ups before I went to sleep.

Wednesday: On the 20th I woke up around 7 am to go to physical therapy to work on my leg balance and strength but had to cancel after my dad had car problems. We got a rental car and I prepared for my game that night with Team Durant in the JV Summer League. After the game I came home and patched up my hip that I skin burned during the game. I then crushed some food, iced and went to bed.

Thursday: On the 21st I woke up around 12 and had weight lifting at Maret at 4 pm and went to varsity practice after at 5 pm. Once practice was over I went home and iced my knees again. After that I relaxed for the rest of the night and did my daily 200 push-ups and went to bed.

Friday: On the 22nd I woke up around 7 am to go to physical therapy to work on my leg balance and strengthening. Once I woke up I went down stairs and had a bowl of oatmeal. Friday was my rest day for the week since I had games on both Saturday and Sunday. I was resting and was bored so I spent some time in the basement in the LAB for about an hour of dribbling. Once I finished I went back upstairs and played a few games on 2k on my career. I then read a few chapters of my book Relentless, and talked to my friends on the phone for a few hours and went to bed.

Saturday: On the 23rd I woke up around 6:30 to 7 am because I had a Maret Varsity Summer League game at 9:30 at Dematha. We won the game by 30 and prepared for our next game at 12 pm. We lost this game because of defensive lapses at the end of the game. Once the game was over I went home iced my knees and did my daily 200 push-ups.

Sunday: On the 24th I woke up around 8 am for my 10:45 am Maret Varsity Summer League game at Dematha. In this game I had my first varsity start and played my best defensive game in the league yet. Once we won the game I came home for about an hour to then leave with my older sister and only sibling to go watch Jurassic World. My sister who is attending college at Fordham University in the Alvin Ailey Bachelor of Fine Arts Program, just finished her first year. Once the movie was over I came home and relaxed and let my body rest for the next busy week to come.

Lou Hutch signing off until next week!!!!!

Moody Park Summer League Top Performers

Jeff Petrozzini

The Moody Park Summer League is underway and Basketball Spotlight was on hand for some of the middle school action. Here are some of the players that caught our eye this evening.

Moody Park Summer League Top Performers

Jeff Petrozzini Forward (Hopewell)- Petrozzini was too strong for TCA inside. He boxed out great when hitting the boards and powered up easily when receiving the rock on the blocks. He shot the rock at a high percentage while on his way to a game high 20 markers. He was a tough competitor all evening.

Mike Jones Jr. Guard (TCA)- “Deuce” took a some to get used to the physical style of the rising 9th grade squad. Once he got adjusted it was business as usual. He utilizes driving lanes very well and can finish with either hand. I like how he creates space off the bounce and understands how to change speeds when attacking. He looked his best when pushing the rock in transition.
Calvin Moore Jr. Guard (Wet Royster.com)- Speaking of pushing the rock this kid has the ball on a string. Moore exploded on the national scene last summer at Future Phenom Camp now his swagger is on another level. He got rid of defenders with ease as the lane opened like the Red Sea. Once he got in the lane he unveiled his drive, draw and dish game. He’s difficult to maintain when he attacking downhill.
Jaren Morton Guard (Black Star)- I pleasant surprise from Burlington County. This wiry wing guard has a nice stroke and polished moves when finishing in the lane. I like how he found gaps in the defense to get his shot off. I hear the rising 9th Grader is headed to Philly Power Neumann Goretti High School. In a few years this kid could be something.
Stesher Mathelier Forward (Black Star)- The rising 7th Grader is oozing with potential while standing 6’5. He understands how to get post position and make a couple of moves towards the basket. On defense his length allows him to cover much ground while blocking or altering shots. This kid might be the future of Mercer County basketball if he keeps growing and developing.
Devonte Hudson Forward (Black Star)- The rising 8th Grader plays with alongside Mathelier. He’s has more body control therefore he can score around the basket easier. He plays the game with good passion and has a high motor.

Joshua Moore

The Trenton Youth Basketball League kicked off today and Basketball Spotlight was on the blacktop. Here are some of the players that impressed us while we were there.

Trenton Youth Basketball League Top Performers

Joshua Moore Guard (PBA 187)- The point guard was a true floor general showing good court vision with this drive and kick game. When the game good crucial he nailed three treys to help his squad grab the victory. His poise in the final moments proved to be vital.

Jack Fromelt Guard (PBA 187)- The big guard came up huge for the winners. He was tall enough to score and pass over the defense. He also kept them honest by being able to knock down the trey ball. He has the skill set and confidence to be a good player down the road.
Jeffrey White Forward (Rukiya Blackwell)- This rising 7th Grader was a load to handle as he dominated early on. He got deep position and kissed several shots off the glass. He also knew how to use his body to get to the charity stripe. He also has good footwork for a player his size.
Yavae Yeager Guard (Rukiya Blackwell)- Yeager arrived after tip off and wen right to work. He showed some wiggle in his game and the knack to score. He proved to have a decent floater and body control near the cup. He already possesses the correct size for his position. I love this kid’s swagger on the floor.
Tushyne Johnson Guard (Rukiya Blackwell)- I remember Tushyne from last year and he’s grown a few more inches. You can see the potential oozing from his veins. The only thing that’s holding him back is his lack of strength right now. Once he keeps stronger and be able to finish through contact he could be curtains for opponents.

MVP's Judah Hildago and Torrey Brooks

The F.A.M Outreach All Star Games took place in Lawnside, NJ and Basketball Spotlight was in the building for the action. The first contest was the rising 6th Graders and the Red Team won 48-28 here are the players that impressed us.

F.A.M Outreach All Star Games Rising 6th Grade Top Performers

MVP- Torrey Brooks Guard (Red Team)- The southpaw took home MVP honors again. His handle includes several crossovers and some mean up fakes. He had defenders on skates all day. His long ball was dropping and he was tremendous in the open floor. His only trouble came when he penetrated too deep. The rising 5th Grader finished with 12 points.
Kiyen Alexander Guard (Red Team)- The pint size point guard was fearless on both ends. He attacked the defense with a low dribble and got to the cup at will. When the defense played off him he showed he could nail the trey. On defense he was a menace for 94 feet and making the ball handlers work. I enjoyed watching him do work.
Tyrone Washaun Guard (Red Team)- Speaking of defense this kid played the best on ball defense in this grade level. He was a total ball hawk pressuring the pill and playing the passing lanes. His offense wasn’t shabby as he attacked the hole and continued to make smart plays. Hard nosed old school point guard.
Marcus Upton Guard (Red Team)- I love this kid’s mid-range game and scoring ability. He came to life in the second half and helped the Red Team take home the victory. He was the spark they needed to stretch the lead out.
MVP- Judah Hildago Guard (Black Team)- Hildago was by far the most talented on the floor. Right now he brings size, skills and a tremendous basketball IQ to the table. He gets anywhere he wants on the floor and his size makes it easy to pass or shoot over the defenders. Entering 6th Grade and he already has the presence of mind to post defenders and pass out of the double team. This kid is a problem.
Rody Colson Guard (Black Team)- Colson has his handle on full displayed. He danced on defenders until the lane opened up. Once he got inside he used his toughness and body control to get a pass or a floater off. He had the rock on a string this afternoon. Throwback guard.
Shareef Jackson Forward (Black Team)- Jackson was a force on the glass and inside the paint. He’s still learning the game in terms of post-up moves and establishing position which is expected for a rising 6th Grader. During his good moments he made some tough moves to the basket, blocked a few shots and crashed the boards.

MVP's Jahaad Green and Deuce Ketner

The F.A.M Outreach All Star Games took place in Lawnside, NJ and Basketball Spotlight was in the building for the action. The second contest was the rising 7th Graders and the Black Team won 63-44 and here are the players that impressed us.

F.A.M Outreach All Star Games Rising 7th Grade Top Performers

MVP Deuce Ketner Forward (Black Team)- One word describes this kid and that is versatility. At first glance I thought he was a primary post player but then other facets of his game begin emerging. He can put the ball on the deck and showed some range on his jump shot. He was able to put the full package together and lead the Black squad to the victory.
Justin Poles Guard (Black Team)- The floor general had the keys to the Black Team engine. He spent the first half controlling the tempo and feeding his teammates. When the second stanza rolled around he lived in the lane again but this time showed some of his scoring prowess. He has supreme body control when finishing at the cup. One of the smoothest guards in this event.
Tre Medley Guard (Black Team)- Medley started the contest with a spark as he ran off 8 straight points in transition. He’s wired to score and knows which angles to attack at. Once he lowers that shoulder when he driving its tough for defenders to slow him down. He’s basically a bucket getter.
Jeremiah White Forward (Black Team)- White was a serious problem as the anchor of the defense. He altered or blocked shots all afternoon. He’s developing on the offensive end but was able to score some buckets when needed. The most impressive aspect of his game was the way he hammered the glass. He dominated the boards on both ends of the floor.
Amir Wilkins Forward (Black Team)- The strong forward has a smooth game. I like how he pats the rock and creates off the bounce. But he also can get it done on the post as he uses his strong frame to pin the defenders under the cup.
MVP- Jahaad Green (Red Team)- Green can score the ball from all three levels and he showed it in their loss. I like the form and confidence he has in his stroke and most of all I like how he competed to the final buzzer even when the game got lopsided. He’s definitely a guard to keep an eye on.
TJ Baker Guard (Red Team)- Baker looked like the most talented guard in the floor. He’s strong, possesses a good handle and can get a clean look whenever he wants. He’s ball handling and strength allows him to get rid of defenders often. Even the shots he missed looked good when he released them. His game reminds me of a young Chauncey Billups. He has a bright future.
Sitafa Hall Guard (Red Team)- Hall used his quickness to impact the game. The Black Team tried trapping this speed demon but he dribbled through the traffic before making something happen. I also like how he competed the entire contest. This kid played with enormous heart.

MVP's William Norman and Rashan Locke-Hicks

The F.A.M Outreach All Star Games took place in Lawnside, NJ and Basketball Spotlight was in the building for the action. The third contest was outstanding as the Red Team defeated the Black Team 111-108 in overtime. Here are the top performers from the event.

F.A.M Outreach All Star Games Rising 8th Grade Top Performers

MVP- William Norman Forward (Black Team)- Norman had the performance of the year yesterday. He started the game on fire and didn’t let up on his way to 48 points. He knew where his bread was buttered as he carried to defenders to the cup and converted. He also operated with great precision on the blocks. He was literally unstoppable and was determined to get MVP and got it done. Congrats young fella you had a huge day yesterday.
MVP- Rashan Locke-Hicks Guard (Red Team)- The brash scoring guard used his quickness to get buckets all afternoon. He was a blur driving the lane and in transition. His change of direction was a problem for defenders. Locke-Hicks scores in bunches on his way to 33 points. Good luck trying to stay in front of this youngster.
Rahmir Barno Guard (Red Team)- Barno might be the best lead guard in the tri-state rising 8th Grade class. The wiggle in his game is superb as he makes defenders vanish when he has the rock. He also was able to score from all three levels. Once he isolates a defender they are at his mercy. I love his crossover and finishing around shot blockers. He finished with 20 markers.
Michael Zaire Paris Guard (Red Team)- The shot blockers felt Paris frame all day. The strong built guard attacked the rim and used his body to shield defenders. This technique worked and he tallied a team high 34 points. This kid went hard from buzzer to buzzer.
Malik Bowman Forward (Black Team)- The Maryland product showed glimpsing of why he’s considered one of the best in America. He finished above the rim on a few occasions and ran the floor like a deer. His handle and play making ability continues to show improvement. He also showed some range on his shot. He finished with 20 markers in the contest.
Anthony Robinson Guard (Black Team)- The kid from Florida was a total joy to watch. He got where ever he wanted on the floor and the defense couldn’t speed him up. I like his mid-range pull up game especially off the bounce. His battle with Barno was the talk of the game. Robinson ball handling will take him a long way in this game.
Deywilk Tavarez Guard (Black Team)- I like the size, court vision and jumper that this kid possesses. He’s able to see and pass over the defense and uses his solid frame to absorb contact when driving the lane. His confidence stands out when he on the floor.

We won our game and ended up coming in 8th out of 31 teams during the Summer League “regular season” prior to the playoffs which started on Saturday. After the game I went home did my daily 200 push ups, iced, took a shower said my Prayers, and went to bed.

Saturday: On the morning of the 30th I woke up and had breakfast and later lunch. After lunch I prepared for my Playoff Varsity Summer League game at 6:15 pm vs Dematha at Dematha by warming up at Sportfit Gym in Bowie, MD. Unfortunately, we lost the game because of team defense lapses early and at key points in the game. I was really upset and not a happy camper after the game. Once it was over I came home and iced. Saturday night was bittersweet, we lost but I also found out that I was invited to the CP3 Rising Stars 2018 Basketball Camp in August in Greensboro, NC. I finished my daily 200 push ups and I praise God when I received the news. After I praised God, I reflected on the Varsity Summer League, things I did well and things that I need to work on. While I made 9 out of 13 3 pointers during the Summer League, 3 of 6 on mid-range jumpers, and scored on fast break and layups in traffic, I need to increase my penetration aggressiveness in the future in terms of attacking the paint and pulling up. I was relatively pleased with my ball distribution and passing, but I will give the team more opportunity with my penetration resulting in greater distribution in the future. In terms of defense I learned a lot about the benefit of channeling Scottie Pippen when I am guarding smaller Guards. Finishing 8th grade and transitioning into 9th grade I am 6’3” with a 6’5” wing span and have vigorously studied Scottie Pippen defense videos including Kobe’s DETAILs video on ESPN+ about Scottie Pippen. Outside of the gym a lot of times I work on footwork and defense drills in my unfinished basement and the driveway at my house. I call it the LAB. After I finished icing I watched some game film, said my prayers, and went to bed.

Sunday: Sunday morning I woke up and took a shower and ate breakfast before I went to Church. Church was wonderful because we talked about forgiveness during youth church, and the power of forgiveness. After church we went to Houlihan’s for a family lunch. Once we finished lunch I came home played 2k and ate dinner. I then did my daily 200 push ups. During our late dinner I heard about Lebron going to the Lakers. Wow!!!! Once I finished dinner I relaxed and went to bed. My body really needed to recover. Now it’s time to prepare for the remainder of JV Summer League, the Peach Invitational Tournament in Augusta Georgia, the Super Showcase in Orlando, Florida and CP3 Camp.
